Slatter best surgery book

This is definately the best small animal surgery book on the market. I have used it as a new grad and even now as a more "experienced" practicioner. Very good for soft tissue and orthopedic topics, with concise but thorough explanations of how/which surgical option is best for each type of condition (fracture type, etc) I'm buying a set as a gift for a new grad!

Even though nearly 80 percent of the world's population is still without access to even a telephone, pundits have already begun to announce the end of the Information Age. Here, Jensen proclaims "the dream society." Makes sense and an easy read

The book is the result of 15 yrs work at the Copenhagen Institute for Future Studies. I bought it to read on my holiday but finished it two weeks beforehand! It made some really interesting points:
* Man has been around for c.100,000yrs: 90,000 as hunter-gatherer, 10,000 as farmer, 200 in industry and maybe 30 in IT. This book provides a glimpse of what comes next!
* We will see a move from the rational to the emotional. `The successful companies of the twenty-first century...besides meeting the social and emotional needs of employees...will want to cater to consumers' emotional and social needs' [e.g. Shopping Malls as Theme Parks?].
* Current accounting methods measure `the company's capital at night...when all employees have gone home'. The author discusses Intellectual Capital: salary negotiations as establishing an employee's value as a company asset and the `real cost of layoffs...just as if tossing computers out the window would destroy physical capital, layoffs involve throwing away human capital. If we are talking top-quality computers with modern software this is a bad idea.'
* In a concept that may have significant employee training and development implications, the author quotes Tom Peters: `Brand yourself' and believes that `the "branded" employee will triumph over the Brand X employee...increase awareness about your existence and skills...'

An interesting book about tomorrow - reality or fiction?

Why do some people buy a watch at $ 10.000, when you can get a much more precise one at $ 10? Because time is not the essential thing - it's about dreams, lifestyles and adventure. Why is the automobile the "New Beetle" such a big success? Because it looks almost like the old one (apart from new technology). Why is the movie "Titanic" the greatest blockbuster of our time? Because it's a story about a ship, a journey into nostalgia, feelings and lifestyles of persons 87 years ago. Dreams, stories, lifestyles, feelings, adventure, nostalgia, care - you'll get all the questions and answers in this well-written and provocative book about the next 25 years in the affluent societies. It's difficult to find arguments against the many examples and facts in this amazing book. Just to mention two examples: according to the author, doctors will gradually be replaced by automation within the health care sector, but nurses will get their golden age because of the explosive need to provide for care in the coming years. And: "The story can be told with a whole range of products, the product themselves being secondary". This is the reason why people buy Marlboro, Nike, BMW, Rolex and other brands at a price many times the price for other more unknown products. There is always a story behind: adventure(Marlboro-man), lifestyle (Nike) or nostalgia (BMW-oldtimers). This well-structured book is not about utopia, it's about the changing patterns of our daily lives, and it's already happening...

Every once in a while, a management guru or academician writes a book so idealistic and simple in its basic premise that it appeals to scholars and businesspeople alike solely for the inherent beauty in its simplicity. Much like the appeal of fairy tales or biographies. No fuss, no complexity, no crooked lines. But whereas this way of storytelling is charming when describing a lifelong career or the fate of princess or princesses, it becomes downright repulsive when applied to modern business and economics. Not only repulsive, but also dangerous. Jensen is learned and a fine raconteur at that, which he uses to his advantage in this book. The basic premise, that corporations of today are selling stories instead of products is intriguing, if not completely original (Pine & Gilmore described the progression of economic offerings towards experience and entertainment in their 1999 book "The Experience Economy"). Had Jensen stayed within the boundaries of a conventional management book, i.e. simplified descriptions and corporate nice-to-know facts, The Dream Society would have been a fair effort, if slightly trivial. The big misstep that Jensen makes is that he, like too many other colleagues, starts to add a philantrophical aspect to his ideas. Not only can the striving towards a dream society be applied to goods and services, but also on the modern family, on the third world, on modern labour, globalization, urbanization etc. In fact, so amazing is Jensens Dream paradigm that there is no area or phenomenon that is left unexplored. Actually, "unexplored" is an inaccurate description. There is no area that Jensen doesn't beleaguer with his newly found buzzword-baby. That's where the book sets off on thin ice. To fully explore a principle, such as "The Dream Society", one must look at its flaws and dangers. The term "fundamentalist" is what we use to describe the people that don't and instead take the written word as the formula to follow. Jensen displays similar dogma and fanaticism in his belief that The Dream Society is our goal and destiny. As he runs astray from the description of economic offerings, he looses the integrity that he displays in the early chapters of the book, his "succesful" attempts to apply the theory to, well, anything become more comical... and questionable.

Great Product

I'm a beginner to Spanish Learning and flash cards have always been the best method for me to reinforce knowledge. These flash cards are good for just that. They aren't miracle workers, just a great tool to use to increase your Spanish vocabulary. Small enough to fit into my purse or any bag. I use them during down times or when I find myself waiting in a line or at a doctor's office, which always leads to a conversation with a stranger about the struggles of learning a 2nd language. The cards are large enough to read without my glasses. :-). They are sturdy and made from the same type of stock paper as index cards. They are a great value for the price.

Very helpful. I use this to teach mentally handicapped children Spanish. There were some cards missing, actually the months of the year. The sellers sent a new box of cards and let me keep the other one. This has been a very effective teaching tool.

JAPANESE ROSE

Japanese Rose was an intriguing read to say the least.
Here is "what I assume to be a true story," about a young Japanese woman named "Sayuri Miyamoto" who disguised herself as a man and became a Kamikaze pilot during the later part of WWII. She actually flew her last mission but, was shot down pre-maturely, captured, returned to Japan and subsequently given a new identity so as not to embarrass the Imperial Japanese Army and it's Bushido codes.
As unique and unbelievable as this may sound, it apparently happened and, the events that lead up to this life-time crescendo are just as interesting to read.
There are numerous typo's, and spacing anomalies, but the story is damn good.
There are parts that seem a bit too over-dramatic and "mushy" reminding me of the events in the Movie, "Titanic" where a blossoming love affair grows between "Jack Dawson" and "Rose Dewitt".
There is a great similarity in the telling of this story with that of "The Titanic", except in this case, the vehicle that introduces this War time love affair is not a passenger ship, but... A Kamikaze training camp and eventual last mission .
There are many strands within this story and one cannot help but feel sympathy, and sadness for a couple so deeply in love caught within the webs of life's destiny.
Despite the numerous typos and poor editing...the book is very good and leaves the reader much food for thought. It is well worth the price... enjoy the story.

Robert Meyer, Frederick H. Ecker/MetLife Insurance Professor of Marketing at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and codirector of the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center. An important book that may save lives

This short, well-written book uses vivid stories from hurricanes, earthquakes, fires and floods to show the mental biases that keep us from preparing for disasters, even disasters we know are coming. The authors apply “Kahneman and Tversky” psychology to improve our behavior.

While most of the examples in this book come from natural disasters, these mental errors contribute to many low probability but high consequence catastrophes. I couldn’t help but think about errors investors make in the stock market. Myopia: focusing on too short a time horizon; Amnesia: forgetting lessons of past disasters; Herding!

The second half of the book offers strategies to overcome these biases, but this area needs more work. The authors present a framework for a behavioral risk audit and describe preparedness plans that take our natural biases into account. I wish they had more examples of successful preparation to share. If planners read this book, maybe those will come.

Basing this book on her Harvard psychology course, Creativity: Madmen, Geniuses, and Harvard Students, Carson sees creativity in a broader context—not just coming up with new ideas but being able to evaluate them and put the good ones to practical use. Each phase of this process utilizes different brain states, and each person feels more comfortable in some brain states than in others. Carson includes self-tests for discovering which brain states the student favors, exercises to strengthen the weaker brain states, and help in sticking to the program. Unlike most self-help books, this is grounded in solid experimental work. The only downside is that the actual text is a bit dull, and attempts to lighten it (e.g., with a series of unfunny jokes and cartoons about a creative caveman and his dim sidekick) fall flat. Readers with whom this title will resonate will probably skip straight to the "What brainset do you prefer?" quiz. VERDICT Readers who liked Michael Gelb's How To Think Like Leonardo da Vinci will love this. So will the self-improvement and business seminar–loving crowd. Creativity Not Just for Artists

"Your Creative Brain" is a must-read for anyone who is looking to find solutions to the challenges they face in everyday life. From how to do your job better to how to handle a challenging relationship to how to create a piece of art, Dr. Carson shows you how learning to be more creative (and you can learn!) can help you be a more successful person.

I got an advanced copy of this book from a friend of mine in the media and I really enjoyed it. I know that Dr. Carson has been teaching at Harvard for years, but her voice and tone was anything but Ivy League Elitist. She makes the case that creativity allowed the cavemen to move beyond their basic way of life to pave the way to our modern accomplishments. She winds the ribbon of the caveman throughout her book in the form of lighthearted cartoons that provide unexpected and much enjoyed comic relief.

This book is packed with information, no doubt about it - each chapter is a description of one of the seven brainsets Dr. Carson sees as being involved in the creative process. Within each chapter is also a set of steps you can do to increase your ability to do that particular brain set. After going through the whole book, I felt like I had got the expertise and know-how of a whole semester course. My recommendation is to go slowly through the book, take your time with each chapter and allowing a chance for the information to sink in before heading into the next one.

I read lots of books that are supposed to help me do something, like be better at this or do that, and very few actually have me finishing them up thinking I really learned something. "Your Creative Brain" doesn't just regurgitate the same old tips on creativity you've heard 1,000 times - this is much deeper, much more insightful, and much more worth your time than any other self-improvement out there right now. I give this book five very enthusiastic stars!

A Good Guide to Becoming More Creative

This is a good guide for anyone who wants to become more creative. The author's premise is that there are different mindsets that contribute to creativity and innovation. She claims that we tend to prefer one or more of these mindsets, and to get full use of our creative brain, we need to access the other mindsets. For example, someone who prefers the Absorb and Envision mindsets can take in a lot of new information and visualize how their ideas will look, but may not be able to evaluate and implement those ideas. They may need better access to their Evaluate and Reason mindsets. The author provides a lot of exercises for each mindset to help the reader develop that particular mindset. Be aware though that she has not confirmed these exercises via testing but they do make sense intuitively. She also provides neurological descriptions for each mindset which basically boil down to which parts of the brain are activated and which not in each mindset. I know that this is the part of the text which I'm going to forget because in the end it doesn't really matter - it's the exercises and the application that are important. The author also encourages the reader to use the token rewards system, a system that has proven effective in creating new habits for things as serious as addictions. I have not had the chance to try it but I think it should work in improving access to each creative mindset.

I *love* this book, and I cannot wait to give copies to family and friends for Christmas!
Once I started reading, I just could not put it down!
I am interested in creativity, but I think anybody, even people who aren't already interested, would enjoy this book.
Before I read the book, I read about Dr. Carson receiving teaching awards, and once I started reading, it was easy to see why she consistently wins teaching awards: The book is easy to read and understand, as well as being interesting and fun. I felt like I was sharing a cup of coffee with a wonderful friend. More than once, I found myself laughing out loud. I learned about creativity, and the most exciting part for me is that I also learned how to increase my own creativity. I am amazed that a book can be so well researched, yet so fun to read!

Worth the money, Excellent approach

Manuals such as this one are difficult to find in favor of more wordy, less process oriented therapy books. The reason for the price is the rarity of these. They are like an accumulation of protocols you would get from many seminars. Maybe it's my background in medicine, but I love having specific protocols, as therapy seems to meaner and waste time when it is too open ended.

I am an AEDP practitioner but I find that CT is a superb approach to integrate. It's difficult to find approaches that work in depth and in a relatively brief amount of time. Other experiential approaches has the practitioner battling defenses, when CT doesn't waste the effort on the direct confrontation.

Something like this is worth investing in, if you find this to be an approach that you want to truly carry out. The 1996 books is a great starting place, but doesn't always provide the process on the "how" of this approach that this manual does.

What Appears Simple is Beautifully Effective

Ecker and Hulley have presented material that appears to be a re-work of other systems, however this is quite deceptive. They offer the opportunity to hone in with laser precision to the conscious and unconscious dilemma of the client. Like their first treatise the process is deep but brief. The integration of moving from a counteractive to transformative work is very powerful in its subtlety.
Again, the truly client focused methodology that addresses the idiosyncratic nature of the client's internal logic to unlock the system is a therapy changing mindset. The material is depth oriented while being brief. Excellent material that needs to be absorbed and experienced.

A must-have addition to the two books on Coherence Therapy!

It is hard to imagine a training manual that is as thoughtful, clearly presented, and densely packed as this one.
Each page describes a technique or an aspect of stance of Coherence Therapy, expertly distilled so as to communicate the essence of that topic as efficiently and effectively as possible.
This manual is not intended to be an introduction to Coherence Therapy, and those who try to read it as such are often misled into thinking that "I'm already doing most of this". It is intended for those who have already read Ecker and Hulley's original book "Depth Oriented Brief Therapy", which makes it unmistakably clear how this modality stands apart from others, and "Unlocking the Emotional Brain", which explains the neuro-science underlying Coherence Therapy.
Coherence Therapy often draws on techniques that are used in other forms of therapy, but does so in a unique manner that makes those techniques far more powerful and effective than most practitioners would imagine. A classic example of this is Gestalt Two-Chair work, a powerful technique to begin with but infinitely more so when implemented in a non-counteractive manner for the purpose of seeking symptom coherence.
Reading the two books on Coherence Therapy leave most people excited but in need of more specific guidance as to how to actually practice it. That's where this manual comes in. It breaks it down step-by-step so that the practitioner can actually begin to do the work.
A must-have addition to the two books on this revolutionary way of practicing psychotherapy!
