David Kung is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. He is also the Director of the Software Engineering Program and the Software Engineering Research Center. He received his BS in Mathematics from Beijing University, and his MS and PhD in Computer Science from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (now Norwegian University of Science and Technology), Trondheim, Norway. A great book for learning and practicing OOSE

This is the best OO software engineering book that I have read so far. I have been using Professor Kung's teaching materials to teach all my four software engineering courses for many years. Since they are easy to understand, my students have learned and followed many software engineering principles and methods covered in the materials to implement various projects in the courses. The courses have been evaluated four of the best courses in the department. I am so glad that, after many years, Dr. Kung has finally decided to publish this book along with the materials.

The book covers very practical and useful methods that are needed for software development. Different modeling methods are introduced in detail for developing different software systems (chapters 7 to 15). There are many great new features about the book. One of them is at the end of each chapter the author covers useful tools and methods for system modeling based on his substantial experiences in industry. Students should have no problem to pick up the tools and methods that have been used in industry immediately after graduation. Another great feature is the author uses simple but practical examples to explain how to use the methods covered in the book. For instance, a lot of examples are used to illustrate how to test OO systems (chapters 19 to 20), and how to apply design patterns (chapters 16 to 17) to save efforts in system design.

Because there are so many great features and topics in the book, I will recommend instructors to cover them in two or three semesters (courses). After learning the topics, students should become a well-trained software engineer.

A better subtitle would be 'A Long Winded Agile Unified Mythology'.

I'm all for agile processes but much of the research that is cited is garbage. One study cited and reprinted in the book reported a p-value of .48 :( . I don't know too many field where .48 margin-of error passes as reliable evidence. Most studies cited were questionably designed, used too few subjects to be reliable, yet the author uses them as premises and then builds arguments on them that are presented as fact. If you are a professor please read this book before assigning it to your class.

Good book, caused us to discuss, think and pray. Maybe some differing conclusions.

She presents her point of view well. As a parent of an adult LGBTQ we need to find a loving way to have a loving relationship with our child, and as a Christ follower, without condemning or condoning some behavior we do not agree with. The author gives a good perspective on this, but, I'm not sure I come to all the same conclusions as she does. The author seems to have a perspective that all behaviors are OK as that is the way God made our children. God has made our children the way they are and we do need to accept that (and them), but some behaviors are still choices, and not ones we need to celebrate or condone. Yet, we still need to love them as Christ wants us to. A good book on the subject, and it caused my wife and I to discuss and explore ourselves, our beliefs, and our relationship with our child more.

What Unconditional Love is All About

Susan Cottrell is a mother and an author who knows how to define her topic and her audience and then stick to both of them. Her topic is how to love and support one’s children when they reveal their sexual or gender deviations from the norm, regardless of one’s dogma, ideology, or peer pressure. Her target audience is Christian parents of children who have trusted them enough to be truthful about their inner discoveries about themselves.

Refusing to get caught up in conflicting arguments, Cottrell handles biblical objection in a few deft sentences: “take those verses that trouble you, along with what you’ve internalized from church, and ask God about it… As I walked through this issue, God addressed my doubts specifically and lovingly, showing me that none of the biblical writers had any concept of a loving same-sex relationship” (p. 27).

Several times Susan Cottrell refers to “a protective mother bear” taking sides with her gay children. I wonder whether Cottrelll knows that the Bible depicts God as an angry mother bear (II Kings 2:24). Whether or not, it is a powerful image for the unquestioning zealous support Cottrell believes good parents owe to their children.

Cottrell has done her homework. She points out that today, 50% of Americans support marriage equality, as opposed to 46% in 2007, and only 27% in 1996. But regardless of such social change, the parental job remains constant—to support their children’s authenticity. Cottrell even suggest that perhaps God has given certain parents an LGBTQ child precisely in order “to set you free from the need to please!” (p. 57).

Cottrell points out that training a child “in the way they should go” literally means training them “according to their own particular inclinations—the way that God designed them” (p. 65). Always, the foundation to build on is Grace, never an absolutistic ideology or concept.

Cottrell reminds her readers of how much sexual standards have shifted through the centuries. With biblical approval, men formerly married multiple wives and took concubines; and if the story of Adam and Eve is taken literally their children had to have married one another incestuously. So our current attitudes about sex and gender had better be open and humble—embracing those children who discover they are transgender, or intersexual, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, or simply questioning.

Always, always, Cottrell calls for the Golden Rule. How would you have wanted your parents to respond if you had to tell them you were gay? Or transgender? Or whatever? Then respond exactly that way!

More than seventy years ago, when I knew I was lesbian and cowered in fear of discovery by my fundamentalist family, I could not have imagined a book like this one. I was in my thirties when God used my love for my son to show me I was acceptable just as I had been created. One night I was on my knees pleading with God for healing from my homosexuality, when a still small voice within me startled me with this question, “Virginia, what do you want for your son?” I answered, “I just want him to be happy.” And the Voice replied, “That’s exactly what I want for you!” So I stood up, stopped asking to be changed, and began to find ways to live joyously within the orientation I had been assigned by my loving Parent.

With books like Cottrell’s, hopefully hundreds of young people will be spared the long fearful alienation I had endured before that liberating moment. And hundreds of parents will be reassured that their children’s sex or gender orientation is not about them, is certainly not their fault, and provides opportunity to show what unconditional love is all about.

Heartfelt and humble; compassionate and compelling!

This is the single most helpful book I read when our son came out. We were already affirming of LGBTQ people, but once our son came out the way my husband and I were treated at our church of 25 years was very hurtful. Susan Cottrell's well-written, compassionate and compelling book helped us through the painful things that were attributed to the Bible by "friends" we though were educated. Susan's heartfelt, humble and well-researched book gave us peace about our sweet son, as well as power to shake the dust from our sandals and leave behind the ignorance of our former church. This book will be helpful to parents of an LGBTQ child - regardless if the child is 5 or 55 - and regardless if the parent is Christian or of another faith. I highly recommend "Mom, I'm Gay."

Don't waste your money

Is it possible that anybody would buy this book instead of the one Shakespeare wrote himself? It isn't that hard: he writes in our Modern English. It just takes a little effort up front in the reading, but it's well worth it. Especially this play, which is so strange and lovely and full of magic. Don't waste your money, or your time, with stuff like this.

I love that the editorial blurb here says what that William Shakespeare is one of the greatest writers in the English language, as it hawks a product that slices up that very language.

After introducing ingredients and utensils, the 20 chapters of Part One are made up of lessons presenting all the basic Japanese cooking methods and principal types of prepared foods-grilling, simmering, steaming, noodles, sushi, pickles, and so on-with accompanying basic model recipes. Part Two consists of 130 carefully selected recipes. These range from simple dishes for daily fare to well-chosen challenges for the adventurous cook. Together with the 90-odd recipes included in Part One, these enable the cook to build up a repertory, dish by dish, from the basic everyday "soup and three" formula to a gala banquet.

Whether preparing a snack for oneself or something special for friends, readers will find themselves reaching for this volume. Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art is a sourcebook of cooking concepts and recipes from one of the world's outstanding culinary traditions.

About the Author

SHIZUO TSUJI was the head of the Ecole Technique Hotcliere Tsuji in Osaka, the largest school training professional chefs in Japan; the author of twenty-nine books on gastronomy, travel, and music; the owner of one of the world's largest private collections of Bach recordings; an honorary recipient of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France award, presented to him by the French government for his mastery and promotion of French cuisine; and Japan's leading figure in the international gastronomic community.

Born the son of a baker, Tsuji graduated from prestigious Waseda University in Tokyo with a degree in French literature, and then found a job as an Osakabased reporter for the Tokyo daily, the Yomiuri Shimbun. It was after being given an assignment to write a feature article on cooking schools in Japan that he traded pen for pan and, with the encouragement of his entrepreneur father-in-law, devoted several years of intensive study to Japanese cooking before going abroad to train with the great chefs of Europe.

Tsuji returned to Osaka in 1960 and developed his father-in-law's small cooking school for housewives into the present academy for professionals with an enrollment of 2,500 students. Today an expert staff of 220 offers intensive one-year courses on Japanese, French, and Chinese cooking with classes six days a week. Tsuji followed the present volume with Practical Japanese Cooking: Easy and Elegant, a full-color presentation of some of Japan's most popular dishes.

Few writers have written more eloquently about food in the past forty years than M.F.K. Fisher. Her books include The Art of Eating and The Cooking of Provincial France (Time-Life), and she has also translated and annotated BrillatSavarin's Physiology of Taste, the Bible of all serious eaters.

The best, better than the rest.

If you're looking to learn the fundamentals of Japanese food from a book that emphasizes the detail and craft, look no further. This is the bible. It reflects the author's lifelong dedication, and contains options ranging from simple to complex. You won't find a better cookbook.

I found myself going to my local izakaya a bit too often, and was looking for a way to prepare treats at home and save money. This came highly recommended with good reason. While other books might have more glossy color photos, they lack the depth and fundamentals.

Tsuji's prose is gorgeous. Chapter by chapter, he elegantly lays out the philosophy behind the cuisine and breaks things down into components. Everything emphasizes how it fits into the discipline as a whole. Reading teaches you how to select ingredients, prepare them carefully, then present the results beautifully.

The depth can be intimidating. Some of the equipment and skills don't have Western equivalents, and I found myself wondering whether I had overestimated my capacity. However, if you're determined, Tsuji will guide you on your way to delicious food. Many recipes are quite simple. And, like anything, it gets easier with practice.

You could spend years with this book and not run out of options. You can also find something you like within an hour. The breadth and depth of Tsuji's masterwork has things to offer for both the novice and the master.

Wonderfull reference for Japanese fundamentals.

This book is not for everyone! I wanted to us the word Japanese Basics in the headline but basics might be the wrong word for Japanese kitchen, as the western world sees basics as simple, the basics of Japanese cooking are in perfecting simplicity, requiring precision, dedication and the very best ingredients. it's an amazing book, really, but doing it right is oh so tricky.
please look for the simple stuff first (like the Teriyaki Sause, which is the best i ever had). make a miso soup and try some noodles, perfect those and if you are willing to invest some time, this book will make you a better chef in all cuisines.

Great guide to recreate hot Japanese food you've eaten

I'm sure you could use this book for ideas, but it is especially useful if you've eaten something you'd like to make and aren't quite sure how to go about it.

That said, I live in San Francisco and pretty much every Japanese ingredient you might need is readily available to me at a reasonable cost. I also have the benefit of having eaten some great Japanese food to give me ideas; I find for myself I look up recipe names rather than browse to find something to cook, but this has enough of technique and flavoring to really help someone develop their skills at cooking Japanese food, which is what I wanted it for.

As always, this cookbook is best used by somebody who has a bit of cooking experience and can understand basic directions without missing a beat. I own 3 Japanese cookbooks and looked at many more before settling on them; this is one of them.

Reaching for God. Chuck Colson's Compelling Journey

I had the unique privilege of working with Chuck for three years. But before I ever knew that I would, I read this book -- not expecting much. At the time, like most people, I thought Colson was using his "conversion" to make himself more palatable to the public. I found that I was wrong -- terribly wrong. Hence, when the opportunity came to work for him, I leaped at it. The thing that caused me to find this book so compelling, is Colson's naked honesty with himself. It is the story of one man searching his soul after being involved in the political wasteland. In this book as well as in his life, Colson proves something which I believe most profoundly: when someone reaches for God, God always reaches back. -- Paul Morris, author of The Justus Scrolls.

Great Story but Poor Kindle Version

The book is great but the Kindle version is terrible. It doesn't always capitalize the first letter of a sentence, will capitalize either the first name but not the last name (or vice versa) of a person's name, leaves out words and hyphenates words such as every-thing, la-bored, erst-while, etc. It almost seemed as though they were expecting these words to be at the end of the line and would have to be split so that the second part would appear on the next line. But I couldn't find any font size that would require the word to be split at the end of a line. I love the story but be prepared to overlook the poor quality of the conversion of the book from print to e-version.

I have read quite a few redemption stories but Chuck's was the one that touched me the most. Even after having been dead for quite some time, Chuck Colson's life continues to impact lives, now mine!
