Better than nothing

As a beginning pianist, with only a year's experience, I found this book a mixed bag.

My favorite song in it is, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind". That song has been simplified to such a degree, that it seems calculated to disappoint beginning and intermediate pianists alike.

The first half can be doctored up a bit to sound a little fuller, such as augmenting the beat on the left hand. The second half of the piece sounds absolutely nothing like the popular song, and you may well wonder if it truly belongs.

As it happens, I purchased more complex sheet music of the same song, and there it is, more or less like this one, so I can only guess, that this is the actual composition, and for his popular release, Guaraldi simply tossed it in favor of something that actually fit. Too bad we don't get that here.

The version of Linus and Lucy is okay, but not as good in my opinion as the version in, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" an easy piano book by the same company, who's arrangement is credited entirely with Guaraldi. I might add, the latter not only sounds better, but is slightly easier to learn!

So the bottom line is that this book will make you work awfully hard to NOT sound much like Guaraldi, although that is probably a reasonable expectation with this music.

This isn't exactly the trio's work note for note, it's simplified quite a bit, and the keys are changed, but still it's still fairly true to form, and definitely fun stuff.

Financial Revelation

I loved this book because it gave me a clear vision and understanding on how to budget, save money and plan financially for my future. I have read many books on finances however, this one in particular gives biblical principles and true wisdom. In addition, Joyce Meyers recommended it!

Good advice

This book offers a Bible-based plan for money management. It is well organized and each chapter builds upon the previous one while reinforcing lessons already learned. The author also uses real-life stories/metaphors to introduce each chapter. It is easy to read with terms that are neither too technical or dumbed-down. It caters to Christians, as it does contain Bible quotes to back-up its principles but that shouldn't stop the non-Christian from considering buying this book.

Perhaps the Greatest Zelda Arrangements for Piano

This is the Zelda book I've been dreaming of for years. These four pieces are taken from the Symphony of the Goddess traveling symphony which accompanied the release of Skyward Sword. Each piece is in the form of a symphonic movement, moving through various different themes from a Zelda game. The tracks are on the audio CD which came with early copies of the game. If you are unfamiliar with the pieces, it may be good to check out the live orchestra versions first to get an idea of what these are.

First, the book is very nice. The binding is stiff, but secure. The score looks beautiful. The full color artwork pages are stunning.

I am picky with piano arrangements. As a classical pianist, I am often disappointed in arrangements which don't mesh well with the piano as an instruments. That said, I happily endorse this book. Playing this music is delightful. There are many moments which perfectly capture the orchestrated versions. The only potential drawback, in my opinion, is that a few ornaments have been simplified; yet, the notes left out are easy enough to add by ear if this is an issue.

As for difficulty, I will not try to describe it with generic terms. In my opinion, the music was not arranged specifically to be easy or difficult. Rather, it was arranged to convey the underlying music. In case difficulty level is a concern, I'll walk through some of the more challenging parts of the Wind Waker piece. Some passages have tricky articulation switching rapidly between staccato notes and slurs. A few passages have two voices played by the same hand, sometimes a 6th or 7th apart. Sometimes the left hand carries the melody or both hands play equally important lines. The key signatures range from 5 flats to 7 sharps. There is an enormous dynamic range. (That's what makes it so fun!) Some chords are fairly large. The time signature is generally straightforward, but there is a brief 7/4 passage. I don't mean this to be intimidating, many parts are quite simple! And above all else, I believe this would be very fun to play even if it takes a little longer to master than other arrangements available. I only include this discussion in case a new pianist is looking for a Zelda book.

This book is a gem, definitely worth any Zelda fan's attention.

Unique and Well Written!

Awesome sheet music, really great adaptation, although these pieces were originally written for this format, we've only ever heard the video game version. Couldn't recommend more if you have a pianist who likes these games. Great seller too.

In the past, much of our knowledge of normal newborn capabilities and development was based more on old wives' tales than on scientific research. Recent studies have disproved much of what was previously believed. The authors, a distinguished neonatologist and a psychotherapist specializing in pregnant women, have brought together several of these innovative studies with over 80 photographs demonstrating the new findings. (Although the Klauses previously wrote The Amazing Newborn, LJ 11/15/85, this similarly titled book is completely different, with new text and photographs.) They offer tips and insights to parents as well as recommendations for changes in professional practice in light of the new knowledge. The photos alone are worth the price of the book. really wonderful--refreshing change

While other baby books (e.g., What to Expect...) focus on all the things that can go wrong with a baby and all the practical concerns, which are important, this book offers such a wonderfully different perspective: the title sums it up...it's about how amazing newborns are and all they can do at the moment they are born. I read it just before and again just after my newborn came along and the just-after reading made all the difference in the world: made me see not just how important it all was but how amazing this little person was. I wish more people would read this book; I give it to everyone I know who has a baby.

This is a must have resource for every parent to be

This is an amazing book! It contains some fascinating facts about newborns that are not widely known. It is absolutely staggering what these little people are actually capable of! I read it when my son was a few weeks old, but I wish that I had read it before his birth. I would have gotten so much more out of those first few days. I am buying this for my niece who is expecting and I plan to use this book as my standard baby shower gift.

Before you have a baby YOU HAVE A NEWBORN!!!

Newborn was my favorite and most immediately helpful relevant and useful book in my collection. I read it when I was pregnant and when my new baby was napping and it was great guidance! It has lovely pictures and descriptions of newborns with all of their miraculous skills, instincts and reflexes. It shows an hour-old infant boldly rooting his way to breast and latching on without assistance for the first feeding. Explains what is happening in the brain, the limits of the focus range and attention span in early days, the different mental states like quiet alert etc, shows how the baby interacts, what they need and why they look so funny. I cant recommend it highly enough for a new mama. The rest of your baby books wont be useful for a few months. THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT NOW!

Clear, Fun, Profound Guidance to Work

I know this is is aimed at consultants, but all of us are consultants, so long as we have to negotiate a work relationship with someone else. And Block shows you how to do this in a clear, engaging way that may have a profound impact on your life.

I have had a copy of this book in all its iterations. I use the current edition in a course I teach. The feedback from the students is that this "soft" stuff is far more useful to them than the technical part of the class--because they realize that most of the obstacles to their work involve people more than actual technical problems.

Some people dismiss this book because it is so "soft." But it is really filled with excellent advice (even scripting conversations for you). And, more importantly, it asks you to confront your own sense of "victimhood." People have choices. You have choices. Your client (or boss) has choices. Make yours. Let your boss make hers (his). And then do the best you can. This sounds simple. But just try it sometime. You will feel like the bravest person you can imagine--and you will be just that.

And once you have absorbed that most important lesson, all the rest of the book will fall into place for you. And Block is an engaging writer. You will enjoy the journey.

I can't recommend this book enough.

More Like a Textbook than a Guidebook

Purchased Flawless Consulting for some information on how to market myself as a consultant and be effective in that role.

I was expecting a book with tips and tricks for being an effective consultant - along with some cautionary tales and advice from the trenches.

This book does not provide the information in a very digestable format. It is very nuts and bolts. Do this, do that, don't do this, do that... with almost zero stories from the field to teach the lessons of the book. There is good information here... but it is a bear to get through it.

I Changed By the End of Chapter 1

A recent workplace development course entitled " Effective Workplace Consulting" led me to this book. The return on investment was invaluable within the first chapter. Block confirmed that I was performing out of role and taught me to consult with peers and not take on their work. Within the first chapter, I have redefined workplace project roles and tasks, moved to 1:1 meetings with project team members and everyone thanked me as I gingerly gave them their work back. Block prepared me for any resistance which led to better meeting preparation...within the first chapter. I am now acting as a consultant opposed to "manager". My supervisor noticed the change and tendered a compliment on my meeting management within a week of my beginning this book. This book made the difference!
.I should have read this book two years ago for my current role and 15 years ago as I started in my career. You cannot afford to not read this book. Personally and professionally Block will show you that you may be acting out of role, futilely exerting energy and setting yourself up for failure. I am now a Peter Block fan.

About the Author
Thomas Hauser is the author of thirty-nine books. His first work, Missing, was made into an Academy Award–winning film. He later authored Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times, the definitive biography of the most famous fighter ever. In 2004, the Boxing Writers Association of America honored Hauser with the Nat Fleischer Award for Career Excellence in Boxing Journalism.

Rounding Up

Opening another year of boxing as recapped by Thomas Hauser is like getting a Christmas present. To pay him the highest possible compliment, he is our generations fistic answer to A.J. Liebling.

That being said, the paucity of writing about the actual fights from 2009 (the year in boxing this book covers)speaks volumes of the nadir that boxing has reached. There were simply no decent big fights to write about this year. The two real "event" fights, both involving Manny Pacquiao were not really competitive.

But one doesn't really need to pick up a Thomas Hauser year in review book just to read about the fights of the year. Hauser leads off with a tribute to the fighting life of Sugar Ray Robinson. He compares his influence in boxing to that of Babe Ruth's in baseball. The superlative standard bearer. The tragedy of his legacy is that no footage exists of his greatest fights in the 1940's, when he was at the height of his greatness. The sadness of his decline is talked of, and also his arrogance and the ugly side of his personality are openly discussed.

One interesting aside is the story of the great H. J. Heinz, the brilliant sportswriter who was commissioned to ghost write Robinson's biography in the early 1970's. Heinz asked Sugar Ray about his AWOL episode during World War II. He got what he felt was an evasive answer, and feeling he could not objectively paint a true picture of the greatest boxer of all-time, declined to continue. It is hard to imagine many journalists in this day and age making similar choices.

Another interesting entry is the journal of Dave Wolf, who was Joe Frazier's confidant. Wolf chronicles Frazier thoughts and feelings toward his nemesis, Muhammad Ali, who caused Frazier deep pain both in and out of the ring. Frazier was one of the bravest warriors ever to lace on the gloves. Give Hauser credit, he is very close to Ali, yet he alowed these passages to see print in his book. For the Ali fan, it shows another side to the man, and is painful to read.

There are the chapters on some very interesting characters around the fight game, who do not participate in the ring, and also a chapter dicussing books that made their way into print about boxing.

I have read four of these year in review books by Hauser, and I anticipate the count moving higher.

There is no bull chit in Thomas's book...
He tell it all like it is and backs down only when he knows the people he is being confronted by are liers and thieves, He refuses totake the easy road and takes you into the bowles of Boxing and it's dirty and alway refreshing sides.
A wonderful anagoly of a very intriguing and fearless man

It is a cool great detailed read that takes you in the ring and I men Ouch he pulls no punches

Excellent book on zombies

This books is zombies from A to Z, by an author who clearly knows his ambulatory corpses.

It contains:

- a nice history of zombies in history and fiction
- game rules for zombies in GURPS, ranging from very old school living zombi slaves all the way to fast-moving infected zombies.
- game rules for massive hordes of zombies in GURPS, too, for when you need to wall the zombies out of your fortress, run them down with your truck, or attack them with your special anti-zombie weapons.

It's a very well written book, and if you game and love zombies, you'd really benefit from checking this out. Highly recommended.
