From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-This engrossing and timely story begins as Leslie Gatlin makes the decision to end her own life. The rest of the novel is told in alternating points of view by the students who played a part in her decision to commit suicide. This intense snapshot of cyberbullying includes the stereotypical queen bee and her minions, who continually send Leslie messages telling her to kill herself and perpetuate vicious rumors insinuating that she is a slut, has had plastic surgery, and a variety of other hurtful comments. Davis does a passable job of presenting the different voices as the teens' part in Leslie's bullying is unveiled, although she does occasionally include expressions not heard in the halls of a typical high school. He makes up for these small inconsistencies in his characterization of Jake, her one friend, and the fast-paced storytelling that keeps unraveling layers to the mystery surrounding why each person chose to harass Leslie. Without becoming too didactic or unrealistic, the conclusion clearly spells out the message that teenagers should think before they speak or post something. While this offering is not as emotionally powerful as Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why (Penguin, 2007), it certainly deserves its place on library shelves.-Tammy Turner, Centennial High School, Frisco, TXα(c) Copyright 2011. Review
"Davis debuts with a gripping mystery. Sharp dialogue, absorbing deposition scenes, blackmail, and complex characterizations will have readers racing through this sensitive and lyrically written drama that affirms, "you're only as sick as your secrets."-Publishers Weekly(September 2012)

From the Back Cover
"I had a bad feeling about all this. Leslie had been bullied. I knew it. Macie knew it. We knew, because we'd done the bullying. Macie could spin it all she wanted, but at the end of the day, now there was tape of her lying about what went on.

I stepped back as Macie crowded forward toward the rush of mics. If you think I'm going down with this ship, you don't know me very well."

I Swear Book Review (Literature)
By DJ
"I Swear" by Lane Davis is a novel about a girl named Leslie who commits suicide due to being bullied immensely. The book follows four teenagers, high school seniors, and their friends as they try to figure out what to do in this time of crisis. As, the book progresses, each of their individual relationships, with Leslie, are unveiled and shows how they all seem to turn their backs on her as their years in high school further. It is plainly seen that they were the ones who bullied Leslie, leading her to suicide, but everything seems to fall apart when they try to keep it under wraps. In doing so, some strong emotions and powerful secrets are revealed to one another as they go try harder and harder to keep this one secret under wraps.
There were many things that I found really amazing about this storyline. First of all the way they tell the each characters' story is really unique. It chapter is named out of one of the four characters, which allows us to see what the character is thinking and what their actions, or points of view, are. I have never seen this before in a book, due to the fact that books are usually based around one protagonist. However, this book is based on four, so in order to get each persons' thoughts and experiences across, they had to of set this up a different type of way. Another thing I liked about this book was the fact that the author was able to give every character their own identity and viewpoint, but at the same being able to fit those personal stories and opinions in a that fits with the others. The way the stories and events fit together is perfect and you are really able to understand each character and what they're going through. The only thing that I would really criticize it about is the book's lack detail. I feel like it could have been a lot longer, and that they could of expanded on certain events and certain thoughts. However, other than that the book has a good way of finding someone you can relate to, without picking sides.
In conclusion, this book is amazing. It is a really good read and really digs into the abuse and gossip that every high school has. Each chapter kept me on edge and each characters' action had me wondering how the others would react. I recommend this book to everyone, young and old. If this authors has any more books like this one, I will make sure I pick it up.

An intense, emotional read on bullying
By Ashley Prince
Originally on the blog: The Bibliophile's Corner

Cover Talk: I really like this cover It's simple and shows that this book is about people. There is no fancy dress or dramatic computer shot, it's the people. Also, the link across their mouths was brilliant.

First Impressions: I saw the cover and was very intriuged. After reading the synopsis, I didn't even think twice and bought it right then and there.

First Line: "Leslie Gatlin couldn't believe the words she was reading on the screen."

Characters: Jillian was Leslie's best friend. And folks, I do not like her. At all. From the beginning to the end of this book, I cannot bring myself to forgive her for the role she played in Leslie's suicide. I just can't. At all.

Beth is a character that I really don't want to ruin. I never liked how she was so willing to do whatever Macie said, but once I learned her story, I could slightly understand why she did what she did. Slightly. Very slightly.

Katherine is perhaps my favorite character. She came in at the end of this all, or the beginning, depending on how you look at it. But once she realized the extent of the bullying and hatred that led to Leslie's death, she worked her butt off to see justice done.

Macie is a evil, soul-sucking, manipulative, fiend. End of story.

Jake. Oh my dear, sweet Jake. My heart breaks for him the most. Jillian is Jakes's twin and best friend. And he was so in love with Leslie. After getting to the end of this book....I can't even put into words.

Plot: Folks, I read this book in two and a half hours and refused to move. I absolutely could not put it down. If my husband wouldn't have been home, the tears that this book brought to my eyes would have flowed and not stopped. Bullying is one thing that I cannot stand. Period. But more than bullying, I hate when it's played down. And lovelies, it is not played down in this novel.

I really thought this book was brilliant and heartbreaking. The multiple POVS and flashbacks made for an intense book about a sick group of people ruining the life of one girl. For three years. Learning the secrets, lies, betrayals, etc. was so emotional. I really don't know what else to say on this book as a whole. But as for the ending...

The ending pissed me off. I'm not going to lie. I truly, truly can't stand it. Maybe it is supposed to be realistic, but I cannot tell you how furious I am as I write this. I just really don't like it. And I really don't like how at the end, this story became the story about Jillian. Again. I don't like her. At all. I don't see how anyone can like Jillian after reading this book.

Final Thoughts: If you want an emotional, tear jerker, read this book. It's a quick, but heavy read that hopefully opens people's eyes to bullying.
