About the Author

Lauren Leslie is Professor Emerita at Marquette University where she directed the Hartman Literacy and Learning Center for over a decade. In addition to the Qualitative Reading Inventory she has published two other books with JoAnne Caldwell, both published by Pearson: The Content Area Reading Assessment: A formative measure of the Common Core State Standards (Pearson, 2015), and Intervention Strategies to Follow an Informal Reading Inventory: So what should we do now? (Pearson, 2013). She has published over 20 research articles and received (with Linda Allen) the Albert J. Harris Research Award from the International Reading Association in 2001. She also received the Bielefeld Award for Professional Achievement in teaching, research, and mentoring of women faculty and students at Marquette University in 2006.

JoAnne Schudt Caldwell is currently Professor Emerita at Cardinal Stritch University. She is co-author of Content Area Reading Assessment: A Formative Measure of the Common Core State Standards, Intervention Strategies to Follow Informal Reading Assessment; So What Do I Do Now? and Reading Problems: Assessment and Teaching Strategies. She is the author of Reading Assessment: A Primer for Teachers in the Common Core Era and Comprehension Assessment: A Classroom Guide. She received her PhD from Marquette University and in 2005 received an Achievement Award from that institution.

The directions in this book are easy to follow

I'm excited to use QRI to help identify the struggling readers in my classroom. The data provided will help me target my instruction to meet the needs of the students. The directions in this book are easy to follow. The online access makes it quite easy to print the forms needed for assessment as well. Since I'm new to QRI, the audio samples provide online are very helpful too.

8 Things I Learned from Reinvent Yourself

The book reads like a stream of consciousness exercise with little or no connection between the different chapters or paragraphs. And yet, it deserves five stars. James Altucher has developed a unique writing skill - he has learned to trim out all excesses and shares his view in the most simple way possible. This is rare and it has to be appreciated.

I enjoyed reading Reinvent Yourself. The book is packed with useful advice. Here are eight of my favorite quotes:

1. We are what we experience every day - “You are not just the average of the five people around you. You’re the average of the five habits you do, the things you eat, the ideas you have, the content you consume, etc.”

2. “Learning never stops. Many people die at 25 but are not put in the coffin until 75. The learning stopped for them early.”

3. Quantity often leads to quality - “Try many things. One thing I realized is that quantity equals quality. People think it’s one or the other but it’s not. When you have a quantity of ideas and things you are trying, you will find quality.”

4. On mentoring - “Believe it or not, sometimes it’s just as good (often better) to read all of their materials rather than be directly mentored.”

5. On how to be creative - “People say, “Everything has already been written.” Everything has already been said. But that’s a lie. I think every outline has already been written. But each human has a unique fingerprint. Just putting that fingerprint on an outline makes it yours, different, unique. And through practice and vulnerability, you make that fingerprint something others want to see.”

6. On how to sell - “If I want to sell an idea, if I want to convince, if I want someone to like to me, I have to figure out how to connect.”

7. On how to find your unique niche - “It’s hard to be the greatest at any one endeavor, but by combining passions, it’s much easier to be the greatest in the world at the intersections of those passions (because there are billions of things that can intersect, you can find your own place in the “long tail of passion” to be the master of).”

8. “But the only thing that gets results is action. Not a single ounce of greatness in history ended with thoughts. It happened with hands. With actions.”

Needs Serious Editing

I like James. I've read his other books. But this one could have been half the length, edited properly, and been a much better book. What James learned from other sources (most of the book) could have been whittled down to bullet lists. And oh, the typos and poor grammar were bad enough, but he actually stated misinformation as fact in far too many cases. Things I know firsthand, even . . . I was actually there. So, although Reinvent Yourself has some great information, it lost me. A little more than halfway through, I just wanted it to end! When I read a non-fiction book, I want to know what it can do for me, not what it did for someone else. Too much narcissism, too much vanity here. Sorry, James, but you let me (and, I'm sure, many others) down. And please, get an editor. Some lines were so convoluted I had to bounce them off other people so we could try to figure out what you meant to say. I hate to close a book feeling disappointed, but I did that with this one.

A BOOK FOR THE NEXT GENERATION: “Your legacy is not what you do. It’s what the people who you teach do.”

There are tons of people out there that are smarter than me that I might not get to talk to. People like Mark Cuban, (he’s busy), Einstein and Gandhi (they’re dead), and Tony Robbins, (he’s Tony Robbins). In “Reinvent Yourself,” James found all those people and wrote down some of their best teachings for me so I didn’t have to work hard finding them myself.

That got me thinking…even if Tony Robbins called me right now and said, “Dawn, come down here for a month and study with me,” I’d hesitate and prepare to turn down the opportunity of a lifetime.

I’d ask myself, “Oh no, what will my boss say?”

I wonder how many “opportunities of a lifetime” I’ve turned down for real?

“Reinvent Yourself” is about putting a stop to all that, about learning to say “yes” to what’s best for me without limits. When I do, I know that’s when the magic happens.

In “Reinvent Yourself” James Altucher tells stories and discusses ways to freedom through the use of creativity, cultivating relationships, and continuously building and layering on new skills.

This got me thinking more. I’m an adult. I’ve had a few careers and am headed for a few more.

As I finished “Reinvent Yourself,” I thought, “This is what we must teach in schools. This is what works…” As an educator, I’ve seen it. I’ve seen kids sleep over handouts and testing but come alive when I say, “Here’s how I use this to make money. You can, too…” and “Go, build it. For real.”

American students are getting less and less creative because they’re tested and standardized to death. Their teachers don’t take risks because they’re constantly being measured and everyone’s afraid they won’t hit “the numbers.” It’s a cycle of stagnation and status quo. Let’s break out of that--teach them to create instead of obey.

That’s what “Reinvent Yourself,” used correctly, has the power to do.

I’ve taught with James Altucher’s “Choose Yourself” in high school classes before. I’ll use “Reinvent Yourself” for sure. If kids and adults are destined to have so many more careers in this economy, I’d be negligent not teaching students how to prepare.

This book reminds me to keep growing wings, and to teach next generation how to fly.

“Your legacy is not what you do. It’s what the people who you teach do.” That’s my favorite quote from “Reinvent Yourself.” I’ll be putting that up on my desk today.

Very easy reading and hard to put down

Very easy reading and hard to put down. It is nice to see a book where you don't have to wait until the last page for the good guys to prevail. My only complaint about this book is that it did not preface the story with a short summary of what went before like the prior two books did. It took me about 50 pages for me to recall the relationships etc. since the prior book in the series was read a year ago.

A Subpar Archer Novel

I liked the early Clifton Chronicles books, but this last installment is just filled with bad writing, poor characterization, and haphazard plot devices. I've read that Archer had a strict deadline to produce this book, which may go to explain why his writing has suddenly dipped down to such a level. A few examples will help illustrate the book's numerous problems.

#1. The Unlikely 10-Year Old
One of the book's minor characters is the youngest in the Clifton family, a 10 year old girl who speaks with the wisdom and vocabulary of a 60-year old college professor. She also has a remarkable degree of independence and responsibility: she makes reservations at expensive restaurants and buys expensive show tickets and everyone she meets instantly deals with her as though she was 60 years old. At no point does the 10-year old girl act like a 10-year old, and too boot she's a super-genius compared to the idiots surrounding her. For example, when a doctored audio tape shows up and causes a crisis, no one knows what to do until the 10-year old steps in (paraphrasing): "Mom, aren't you good friends with the world's foremost expert on doctored audio tapes? Perhaps he could do a decibel analysis on the voice recording to look for discrepancies?" Mom: "Wow, it never even occurred to me that my good friend the world's foremost expert on doctored audio tapes might be able to help us in dealing with this crisis caused by a doctored audio tape. Thank goodness you are here to save us!" Seriously?

#2 Love interests are introduced and quickly killed for no apparent reason
Seb meets and instantly falls in love with a woman. Predictably, things go badly, but Seb knows that she is the True Love of His Life And Without Her His Life Is Over. In the span of about 20 pages, the two meet, fall in love, he overcomes her reluctance, her parents intervene and kidnap her, Seb jets to India to save her, and then she gets shot and killed. One page later, Seb acts as though this murdered True Love of His Life and Without Her His Life is Over never even existed. She is mentioned only once, in passing, for the entire remainder of the book. What, then, was the point of including the character and the subplot?

#3 Absurd conflicts that are suddenly resolved via Deus Ex Machina
The Farthings chairman has drugs planted on him during a flight and faces a long prison sentence. Now, as readers we could predict that Archer would have him saved via some dramatic plot device at the last moment. But the entire solution takes place off page. A private detective gets hired, and the trial begins with no mention of what the detective has been doing. Then, magically, on the last day of the trial, the private detective finds a previously-unknown stewardess who was arrested on unrelated smuggling charges in a different country. The chairman of Farthings knows it is illegal to carry more than 10,000 pounds sterling cash into the country, but inexplicably does just that. So what, then, was the point of it all? In another case, Seb is trying to meet up with the Other True Love of His Life and gets suddenly called back to England to deal with the drug planting crisis. He tries to call his True Love to explain why he won't show up at their restaurant date, but the phone is busy and so he can't contact her. If only there was some technology that would allow people to communicate in something other than real time--for example, imagine the possibilities for human history if wood pulp could be pressed into a flat shape so that marks and letters might be drawn on it to communicate ideas to other people who might not be physically present. In other words, it never occurred to Seb to write her a quick note and have it delivered to the restaurant or to his daughter's school.

#5 New characters and subplots get introduced despite having no reason to exist
One example would be Seb's temporary love interest, who quickly gets killed off. Another would be a minor subplot about Harry's publisher merging with a bigger press and then going independent again. Why are these subplots there when they contribute nothing? The best example is the inclusion of Margaret Thatcher as a character. Thatcher does nothing in the book except have a few conversations with main characters, and those characters then walk away thinking to themselves: "Hey, this Thatcher might become Prime Minister some day." We get it, She becomes Prime Minister someday. By the fifth or sixth time we get reminded of this, we have to wonder why we should care.

Mr. Archer should read Mark Twain's classic piece, "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses." Archer violates a number of Twain's rules for literature, most notably:

You have to suspend reasoning and common sense to make the plots believable

Spoiler alerts: I liked it but some of the plots left me scratching my head. For instance, the courtroom where they are defending Hakim. No one brings up the most important issue, which is he was just about to merge with another bank and one of the stipulations is never been in jail. Well he was in jail so was it supposed to be never been convicted of a crime? They also don't mention the merger at all in court and how advantageous it would be to their many competitors if the bank didn't merge. Then there's Hakim and the tapes. They tell him that he'd be in trouble if he presented his evidence because you can't record someone without them knowing it. But the tape they are submitting recorded him without him knowing it so it'd be inadmissable. If he did know he was being recorded, he certainly wouldn't incriminate himself on a recorded line at his bank. There are a few more (Virginia Fenwick and the whole baby debacle, there were paternity tests back then). I feel this one was a bit garbled with too many plots that you are forced to suspend common sense to believe.

I agree with the other 1-star reviews here.
1) Some of the questions/explanations are horribly written.
2) Some of the answers are inaccurate (or wrong, in my opinion).
3) Some of the questions are obviously meant to trick you (compared to the actual SAT Blue book test in US History, which is much more straightforward). So, using this book might cause the student to get into the habit of 'overthinking.'

About the Author
Ira Greenberg directs the Center of Creative Computation and is Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the Meadows School of the Arts and Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University, Dallas TX. He is the author of Processing: Creative Coding and Computational Art and The Essential Guide to Processing for Flash Developers, both from friends of ED/Apress. Ira received his BFA from Cornell University and his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania.
