About the Author
Both authors have extensive experience in the telecommunications industry. They have been involved in more than 50 transformation projects of telecommunications operators worldwide.

Prof. Dr. Christian Czarnecki works as a professor at the University of Applied Sciences, which is part of the Deutsche Telekom Group (Hochschule f�r Telekommunikation Leipzig, Germany). His lectures and research focus on information systems and the telecommunications industry. He has a broad practical experience in different consulting companies and has managed numerous transformation projects of telecommunications operators in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. In the TM Forum he is involved in the further development of the enhanced Telecom Operations Map (eTOM). He received a doctorate of engineering from the University of Magdeburg for his research in the field of enterprise architecture and reference models.

Christian Dietze is based in Abu Dhabi and works as regional director in the international telecommunications industry. He has held various leading positions in the telecommunications industry and has been responsible for the management and quality assurance of significant restructuring projects in the Middle East/North Africa, Central Africa/South Africa, Europe and Asia for more than a decade. Most recently he has been supporting several chief executives of leading international telecommunications operators to successfully establish their digital business units. In the TM Forum he has a leading position in the further development of eTOM. He received his Master�s in Computer Science from the University of Koblenz-Landau, Germany.

Read it for Joyce, not just Jack

Joyce Johnson's memoir of emerging from an overprotected childhood and landing at the center of the Beat movement in the 1950's is a delight whether you choose to read it for its portrait of Jack Kerouac, for the world that was, or for the inner journey it reveals. It is a fine literary performance. Johnson plays with tense and perspective as if they form a telescopic lens sliding the past out of a fuzzy black and white still photograph into a vivid, colorful present. There is a suspenseful tension to the book from which flows a novelistic structure, never, though, at the expense of truth. Johnson gets down like no one else how it is to carry around that overprotected childhood, to always feel that you could be missing something, that the center has yet to be achieved. Her inner struggle matches the themes of the Beats who are seeking the pure experience of being through their music, their talk, their drugs and alcohol, their lovemaking, their travels and their poetry. She nails the paradox of a quarry that can never sit still, whether it is a person, like Kerouac, or her friend and guide into the Beat world, Elise Cowen, both of whom eventually disappear into their demons. She captures the loss of balance when counterculture is encroached upon by the mainstream. She manages to convey all this without telling, just through showing the events of her life. Johnson is wry but never bitter, she takes full responsibility for her own choices and actions. This is a book that invites the reader to share the wonder that this was all, indeed, real.

Enjoyable memoir

This is an extremely well-written memoir about the college (and following) years of a young woman who happens to fall into the middle of the Beat circle in the early 1950s. The author comes off as a very sympathetic character, and, when I closed the book, I was sorry that Joyce had not continued the story for a few more years.
I was struck by how much the intellectual world has changed in the last half-century: In 1950, the cultural avante-garde could be found (almost by definition) only around some Ivy League schools (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, etc.), a couple of midwestern schools, and, I guess, Stanford & Berkeley. Today, "place" is not nearly so important.
This is a very nice book. If you've gone to the trouble of getting to this page, you ought to take the next step and read the book; you won't be disapppointed (although you may continue to wonder just why the beatniks faded away in the early 60s).

Essential reading

As a long-time reader of Beat literature, and as a man, I must say that Joyce Johnson's take on those heady, wine soaked days of poetry and madness is absolutely as good and as necessary as anything Kerouac or Ginsberg or any of the more famous (male) crew ever wrote. For my money it's right up there with On the Road.
I guess I've read this book three or four times now and it never gets old.
I also recommend Ms. Johnson's novel, In the Night Cafe, another skillful invocation of the Beat period.

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Theory and Bastien Primer music go together

We ordered the Bastien Primer Theory and at the same time the music books together. I have an eight and eleven year old daughter who were both began piano together. The Theory book is very important because it provides worksheets to help test your knowledge of notes and music terminology. It helps a piano teacher know where their student is struggling and which aspects of their lesson may need to be reviewed by how they progress or struggle with each theory lesson. These books offer great instructions and large enough spaces to work within. Theory also helped my children understand why a sharp, break or music key was needed within a specific musical piece. This knowledge helped them to be able to play, read, and count music faster.

Bought this and the other primer level books for my 7 yr old daughter who wants to learn piano. Her teacher recommend we get these and start with these so she can practice at home. She does very well with all the books that we got her. Very easy to follow. I am musically inclined and I play many instruments, however piano is not one of them. So the books are great to have around if you want to teach yourself a little more and learn with your kids. I have definitely learned a little more myself while helping my daughter to practice. As she continues to grow musically I am sure we will follow with the series. As always, with anything that requires practice, this will only help you to learn and to expand your knowledge. It is up to you or your child to practice and learn through repetition.

About the Author
Omar Hijab is Professor of Mathematics and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Information Technology, and Operations in the College of Science and Technology at Temple University. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, and has served previously as Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Temple University. His research interests include systems theory and control; probability theory and stochastic processes; differential equations; mathematical physics; and optimization.

In this colorful yoga guide Holly gracefully outlines the benefits of aerial yoga while offering a playful insight on essential oils, chakras, and the idea of embodying the goddess within. After taking her teacher training through Aviana and using this book for the course, I couldn't imagine a better text for learning how to sequence an elegant and intentional yoga practice. It is beautifully written and easy to navigate. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in deepening their yoga practice or just interested in learning about aerial arts and other healing modalities.

This book has created an entirely new path for my yoga practice. The photographs and clear explanation of entering and exiting each pose provide a safe, fun road-map for anyone interested in elevating their practice. The book also provides a brief introduction to essential oils and their powerful benefits.

Excellent resource.

This book is by far the most thorough and well put together aerial yoga resource that I've ever seen. The 282 pages of color illustrations make understanding and learning poses far less confusing than many of the other books on the market. So glad that I decided to order one up for the bookshelf.
