A wonderful book for APBT owners and fans!

As an owner of a 90+ pound APBT, I have tried to read all the books and articles I could find on the subject of pit bulls. This is BY FAR the best book I have found. Many writers of such books are extremely one sided, either portaying the dogs a vicious killers or as baby dolls. Mr. Stahlkuppe very fairly shows the good points of these dogs, as well as the bad. This book should be required reading for all prospective pit bull owners.

Good book for anyone that wants truth about this great breed

For someone who wants to get an American Pit Bull Terrier should read this book. It talks about responsible ownership and how to socialize your puppy so that it will become a good canine citizen. Although it has a whole chapter about dog-fighting which I don't like, it uses that information to explain the temperament of the breed - which is not a vicious animal like everyone says. Ofcourse they don't like dogs, although some live with other dogs their whole life without any incidents. They love people and strangers and are not guard dogs - in fact they love people so much that they will let a stranger in your house, take everything including the pit bull. Some pit bull owners even get other dogs like Dobermans to protect their pit bull. It might sound strange but its true. Bad breeding, dog-fighters, and the media gave this breed a bad reputation. Before you buy a dog - read this book first. Pit bulls are only for very few people - only if you you are getting this dog as a pet, have lots of time to spend time with them socialize, and have time to love them then may be you should consider this breed.

Wonderful, informaitive, Truthful

This book gives a truthful picture of APBT's. It also has exclent information on caring for this breed through it's life. I purchased it for my mother, who was nervous about the breed, before I adopted my dog. After reading the book she was looking forward to having the adition to the family come and was sharing her new found info with friends and family who had negitive reactions when hearing I was getting an APBT. An exclent book to have on hand and share with those intrested in the breed, who own the breed, and who don't know the breed.

I found this book to be an incredibly helpful study aid. I am wrapping up in an NP program and it was great to have on standby when I needed a quick pathophys refresher. I found it to be a useful supplement to help me gain a better understanding of the major disease processes and actually retain the knowledge instead of memorize it. This also made it simple to tie the mechanism of action to the different drugs classes used for various diseases. The book is concise and entertaining.

Great for returning students

This really helped during my FNP pathology class. I used this as a tool before I started my assigned readings. There are a lot of visual examples that helped me. Also, I like to grasp the basics first, and then dig deeper. Sort of like stepping into the shallow end of the pool first. I highly recommend this book for students who are returning to a masters program and need a review.

Best Short Overview of Pathophysiology for All Clinicians

I am a nursing student who learns things by understanding them on a deep level (causes, patterns, connections) rather than by memorizing isolated fragments. So this book is excellent for someone like me.
Unlike the assigned textbook for pathophysiology, this book begins its survey of the clinical problems that can affect each body system with a "big picture" preview--and always in the simplest, clearest language possible. Here, for instance, is how the pulmonary system chapter begins: "What problems could affect the alveolar sac and/or airways? 1. The sac is already filled with something other than air. 2. The sac does not open adequately. 3. The sac is unable to expire adequately due to either obstruction of the airways or decreased elastic recoil of the sac itself." The rest of the chapter simply fills in the details of these three possibilities.
Moreover, the book is filled with extremely useful devices for remembering and organizing the information presented. There are on virtually every page very clear diagrams, pictures, or formulas that capture a central concept in a memorable figure. For instance, a figure depicting the renal system, with blood supply, nephron, and collecting system (ureter, etc) uses little pointing hands to show the classification of kinds of acute renal failure: prerenal, intrinsic, and postrenal. Second, the book has many helpful mnemonics. For instance, "aldosteRoNe causes Reabsorption of Na (sodium)."
Finally, the book provides detailed but wonderfully clear and simple explanations of virtually every pathophysiological problem, including many of the major diagnostics for distinguishing them. Moreover, it frequently uses questions in the text to give the reader a chance to think about the problem. For instance, in discussing hyperthryroidism, the author points out the two main mechanisms: "The thyroid over-secretes thyroid hormone (primary) or the pituitary over-stimulates the thyroid to secrete thyroid hormone (secondary). One needs only one lab value to distinguish between primary and secondary hyperthyroidism. Which one? Think about negative feedback. If the thyroid itself secretes lots of hormone 'without being told to,' this would increase negative feedback on the pituitary. So in primary hyperthyroidism TSH will be low."

A Great take on the Universe

I enjoyed the vulnerability shown in this book and the moments when Sean learns to relax and be. Helps me realize that I need to meditate more and let go of trying to control all aspects of my life. Love is all that matters and fear keeps us from it. Thanks for your insights Sean

About the Author

Unique learning aid in the field

I had the first edition of this book 35 years ago as a young philosophy student. It was a unique book and the charts were amazingly detailed and helpful, covering every branch and sub-branch of philosophy. The charts fold out two or three leaves since one or two pages simply wouldn't be enough. Each section and chart has an introductory essay discussing that field of philosophy, and the summaries by Hunnex are also first-rate. Overall, a unique book and a very helpful visual aid to "get the birds-eye view" of a complex area of knowledge. And last but not least, the introduction to philosophy by Hunnex at the beginning of the book is excellent too.

Philosophy, The Big Picture

I am very much a casual student of philosophy, but I have become more intrigued over the years by the intersection of classical philosophies and politics.

Philosophy is inherently abstract and defined by words and terminology, and it is often difficult to see the similarities and the relationships between different philosophies.

This compilation of charts and thumbnail descriptions of major philosphers and philosophies is magnificent. It very efficiently and concisely depicts the "family trees" of many philosophical schools and trends and makes it easy to grasp relationships that were often hidden in abstract philosphical jargon or euphemism.

This is a wonderful accessory for any student of philosphy or ideas who wants a clear, ready reference for the origin of the great ideas of society and politics.

The need for a book like this is becoming increasingly important, as more and more Christians -- from all backgrounds -- seem to be lacking in the understanding of the basic philosophical presuppositions which underly their theology.
In this book, the interested student will not only become familiar with the philosophers themselves, but with cogent explanations of various key elements of philosophy.
