About the Author
Milton D. Hunnex was professor of philosophy at Willamette University, Salem, Oregon. He was the author of Existentialism and Christian Belief and numerous articles in scholarly journals.

Unique learning aid in the field

I had the first edition of this book 35 years ago as a young philosophy student. It was a unique book and the charts were amazingly detailed and helpful, covering every branch and sub-branch of philosophy. The charts fold out two or three leaves since one or two pages simply wouldn't be enough. Each section and chart has an introductory essay discussing that field of philosophy, and the summaries by Hunnex are also first-rate. Overall, a unique book and a very helpful visual aid to "get the birds-eye view" of a complex area of knowledge. And last but not least, the introduction to philosophy by Hunnex at the beginning of the book is excellent too.

Philosophy, The Big Picture

I am very much a casual student of philosophy, but I have become more intrigued over the years by the intersection of classical philosophies and politics.

Philosophy is inherently abstract and defined by words and terminology, and it is often difficult to see the similarities and the relationships between different philosophies.

This compilation of charts and thumbnail descriptions of major philosphers and philosophies is magnificent. It very efficiently and concisely depicts the "family trees" of many philosophical schools and trends and makes it easy to grasp relationships that were often hidden in abstract philosphical jargon or euphemism.

This is a wonderful accessory for any student of philosphy or ideas who wants a clear, ready reference for the origin of the great ideas of society and politics.

The need for a book like this is becoming increasingly important, as more and more Christians -- from all backgrounds -- seem to be lacking in the understanding of the basic philosophical presuppositions which underly their theology.
In this book, the interested student will not only become familiar with the philosophers themselves, but with cogent explanations of various key elements of philosophy.

Excellent

This book is an excellent resource and an absolute must-have for anyone in the field of Applied Behavioral Analysis! Though the book does use some techinical language, terms are explained well and become easier to understand as you go. I also think that any speech therapist or SLP working with children with developmental disabilities would benefit greatly from reading this book. There is so much good information in it!

Must Read for Speech Therapists

As a Speech-Language Pathologist who is currently working on becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), I believe this is a must read for any and all speech therapists who work in Early Intervention and/or with children with autism. This book provides step-by-step instructions on how to improve verbal speech skills ranging from a child that is nonverbal and aggressive to more complex skills such as requesting missing items. This book provides a different prospective to teaching a child to communicate than many "developmentally focused" speech and language textbooks. By combining my previous knowledge and expertise of speech and language with specific teaching tips from this text, I believe that I have become a better therapist and my patients have also benefited exponentially.

Excellent overview of the verbal behavior approach

I'm writing this review as a parent, not a professional, for the benefit of other parents or non-behavior analysts who are interested in learning more about ABA/verbal behavior.

This book is aimed at professionals or at the very least, well read laypeople. Don't read this book until you are familiar with the basic concepts of applied behavior analysis. The book does define terms such as establishing operation, tact, and mand, but you don't want this to be your introduction to ABA. As well as other introductory texts on ABA, I would recommend reading Mary Lynch Barbera's The Verbal Behavior Approach first.

This book will not make you (the non professional) a behavior analyst or capable of implementing your child's program yourself. What it does is give you a deeper understanding of the theory and practice of verbal behavior so that you will be able to understand and assist in your child's program. Verbal behavior uses different concepts from traditional language development materials that you may encounter in speech language therapy. Instead of phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, Skinner's VB theory looks at the functions of language--requesting, labeling, echoing, etc. By understanding this classification, you can understand your child's specific strengths and weaknesses more thoroughly. (Do note that the initial assessment presented is at a 2-3 years of age level; it does not accommodate all possibilities.)

The major flaw of the book is that it was published in 1998 and I do hope that a revised edition is issued. It is lacking in a few notable respects: for example, the research on AAC is much more developed than is presented here and the study of PECS in particular has been much advanced. Sundberg and Partington are not anti-AAC, but I believe that today they would have more information to provide in implementing it and supporting its use.

The language is also an issue. This is obviously a book for professionals and not one to comfort parents, but some of the terminology is no longer used and is opposed by autism advocates, such as using "training" instead of "teaching." The term "compliance training" made me wince, even though the definition is fine (that the first focus of ABA is to get the child to trust the therapist).

However, despite the age of the book, it clearly addresses issues which are still a problem today. The authors emphasize the need to tailor the program to the child's needs, to use activities which are highly motivating, and to make strong use of the natural environment as it provides strong reinforcers and enables the child to generalize rather than only be able to use rote speech.

About the Author
Dan Senor, Adjunct Senior Fellow for Middle East Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, has been on the front lines of policy, politics, and business in the Middle East. As a senior foreign policy advisor to the U.S. Government , he was one of the longest-serving civilian officials in Iraq. He has also served in Qatar and studied in Israel. Senor's pieces are frequently published by The Wall Street Journal.
Saul Singer lives in Israel and is a columnist for The Times of Israel and an adjunct senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute. Before moving to Jerusalem he served as an adviser in the U.S. Congress to the House Foreign Affairs and Senate Banking Committees. He was an editor at the Jerusalem Post and has written for the Wall Street Journal and Newsweek.

A comprenhensive and illustrative book

Israel, has always fascinated me. I went there on a holiday trip last year (2011) and started to see many developments and solutions they have created in different fields: solar energy, irrigation, IT development, agriculture and so on. So when I came across this book, I knew I had to have it in order to understand, how a young country (60 years) have surpassed older countries that posses vast natural resources and that there are not in a constant fight for survivor.

This book is very easy to read. The authors portraits Israel from its beginnings and what they have done to be where they are right now with examples and without getting into much technical and economical terms.

They have a long road ahead, but what they understand and its intrinsic in his culture is to keep innovation and coming up with solutions. Failure is not seen as something bad, but instead a learning experience that is encouraged.

Excellent book. Applies both to the businesses and to the individual...

Riveting Read

I literally devoured this book inside of a couple of days. But then again, futurism—global trend analysis, grasping patterns before anyone else sees them—is kind of my thing. And while I’m not looking to give Alvin Toffler or the Naisbitts a run for their money any time soon, I do translate my farsightedness into sci-fi novels. Still, often times those sci-fi novels will start by extrapolating still further from books like these.

But let’s say none of that interests you. If you’re thinking along the lines of just what it takes to get the global economy out of the toilet, or to make your company, corporation, city, county, regional sector, or country highly competitive in the global marketplace, then this book is absolutely for you. Considering how hopeless our own politicians have been along both sides of the aisle at putting forward and acting on genuinely great visions that can empower our economy and individuals to thrive in the global marketplace, a book of this kind couldn’t be more timely or more important.

How much can we take from the unique combination of circumstances in Israel that transformed it into a technological juggernaut and apply it to ourselves in the U.S. or in other countries? That’s a good question. But for this reader, I feel studying their example is up there with staring at the burning bush; you can almost be blinded by the light. Assuming you can fix your gaze on the nuggets of wisdom packed into the pages long enough without turning away, I suspect you will find it a life-transforming experience, as I did.

Not at all incidentally, the book is beautifully and artfully written. This is not the kind of nonfiction you read as homework while gritting your teeth and wishing the author had taken a writing class or two; it’s not the kind you would never have read if some college professor hadn’t foisted it on you. The free sample on Amazon alone should more than suffice to propel you into the book as it did for me. In my case, the book also came highly recommended on Fareed Zakaria’s weekly news show, which definitely prompted me to take a look.

Multiple good insights. However, found the book to be extremely repetitive and with a limited set of examples of companies to reiterate the same few points on competitive advantages Israel built / formed. With so many startups would have liked more stories and more data on exact numbers.

Good ideas, but don't care for the background

I generally don't care for the art. Why is space mostly red, and so crowded with unknown things that you have trouble figuring out the picture? Why travel from planet to planet if no one makes any profit, as you only earn enough for repairs and expenses? But on the other hand it mainly uses Fate Accelerated - which I prefer. Other species (not called races as in other rpg's) are made so simply it requires only one non-binding Approach change, and a new title (This one's an Orc, that one's an Elf). Two easy to use magic styles. Raw untrained magic - which can backfire, and worked out safe but taking time magic. Includes a scenario and some suggestions for others.
So I will use the species and magic, but I think I will avoid the background campaign.
