Great companion for abnormal psychology or psychopathology coursework

This is one of several textbooks we use in my psychopathology course in the clinical counseling psychology master's program I am enrolled in. This is an excellent companion for studying psychopathology or abnormal psychology. The authors are honest about shortcomings in the DSM-5, and present useful and direct information for major psychological disorders, including diagnostic information and etiology.

You can tell each chapter was written by people who were very proud of their work --- a lot of superfluous verbiage but still an excellent textbook. I actually really love it this textbook.

About the Author
Steffen W. Schmidt is a professor of political science at Iowa State University. He grew up in Colombia, South America, and has studied in Colombia, Switzerland, and France. He has a B.A. from Rollins College and obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York, in public law and government. Dr. Schmidt has published 14 books and over 130 articles in scholarly journals and is the recipient of numerous prestigious teaching prizes, including the Amoco Award for Lifetime Career Achievement in Teaching and the Teacher of the Year award. He is a pioneer in the use of web-based and real-time video courses and is a member of the American Political Science Association's section on Computers and Multimedia. He is known as "Dr. Politics" for his extensive commentary on U.S. politics in U.S. and international media. He is a weekly blogger for Gannett, and comments on CNN en Espanol and Univision, as well as WNYC, New York. Dr. Schmidt is on Facebook (Steffen W Schmidt) and Twitter (DrPolitics).

Mack C. Shelley, II is a professor of political science and statistics at Iowa State University. After receiving his bachelor's degree from American University in Washington, DC, he went on to graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he received a master's degree in Economics and a Ph.D. in Political Science. He arrived at Iowa State in 1979. From 1993 to 2002 he served as elected co-editor of the POLICY STUDIES JOURNAL. Woodman and Brian J. Reichel); AMERICAN PUBLIC POLICY: THE CONTEMPORARY AGENDA (with Steven G. Koven and Bert E. Swanson); and QUALITY RESEARCH IN LITERACY AND SCIENCE EDUCATION: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES AND GOLD STANDARDS (with Larry Yore and Brian Hand).

Barbara A. Bardes is professor emerita of political science at the University of Cincinnati. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Kent State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. She served as a faculty member in political science and dean of Mundelein College at Loyola University of Chicago. In 1993, she was appointed dean of Raymond Walters College of the University of Cincinnati, where she served until 2003. She returned to the political science department, where she held the position of graduate director before retiring. Bardes has written articles on public and foreign policy, and women and politics. She also has co-authored Declarations of Independence: Women and Political Power In 19th Century American Novels; Thinking About Public Policy; Public Opinion: Measuring The American Mind; and American Government And Politics Today.

R. Lee Ermey is a nationally-recognized pop culture icon. His acting career was launched with his memorable role in Full Metal Jacket, in which he played the highly quotable boot camp sergeant (“What is your major malfunction?”). Recently, he hosted the History Channel’s popular “Mail Call” program on military technology for seven years. Ermey served in the United States Marine Corps for eleven years, rising to the rank of staff sergeant; later he was granted an honorary promotion to gunnery sergeant, earning him the nickname “Gunny.”

Get your life squared away straight away with The Gunny!

Of course you have seen R. Lee Ermey on TV and on the movie screen. He is usually, but not always, the Drill Sargent. In fact, for the past generation he defines the image of what we think a Marine Drill Instructor is or at least should be. I am not a Marine so I will leave that for others to decide. He is a compelling presence on the screen and there is no doubt or debate about that.

This book is part autobiography and part motivational. In fact, I think the focus of the book is its motivation to help its readers get excited about getting control of their lives and getting things “squared away” and moving forward in life. The stories R. Lee Ermey tells about his life are there to illustrate the principles he is driving home (and to hold our interest – personal stories are always more attention grabbing than abstract rules and principles).

We learn about his early life, his joining the Marines, how he knocked around before he got into Hollywood. How he got his first break in the movies as a technical consultant and how he got on the screen the first time. And of course, we learn what it was like on the sets of those movies, especially the set of “Full Metal Jacket” and how grateful the Gunny is to Kubrick for that role. But all the interesting stories are in service to a bigger goal: helping the reader – especially young men and women – understand what it is going to take to get their lives in order and heading in a good direction with energy and purpose.

The writing in the book sounds just like Ermey does on the screen. Direct, forceful, and mildly Marine coarse. He entertainingly drives home the importance of being in charge of your life, no Marine waits for the enemy to come to him. He decides on an objective and goes and achieves it. He shows you what you need to be prepared in life – a solid education, skills, seeking opportunity, seizing it when it shows its face, and finding a way of turning setbacks to your advantage. The trick is, you can’t get ready after you see the opportunity. Rather, you need to get yourself ready to seize the opportunity you seek so you can both recognize it and act on it.

He has a great chapter on physical fitness and its importance to your life. While he in no way tries to give you the one and only one true way, he does offer suggestions and an exercise program that will help you if you take it one step at a time.

Another key to success Gunny Style, is carrying more than your share of the load. People who find success always – ALWAYS – do more, work harder, chase down more opportunities, and refused to be stopped by failure – than the average person. You need to become that guy, too. When you experience a “major malfunction” you cannot quit. You cannot even slow down. You size up the situation and go right back at it in a positive way.

Ermy recounts the way the Marines shaped and made his life and how it can do the same for you. He asks you to consider becoming a Marine and some reasons to think about it and how it will change your life for the better, allow you to serve your country, and join the brotherhood of Marines that you are a member of your whole life whether on active duty or not.

He ends the book with a chapter on how you can develop your leadership skills and what he thinks being a leader means and it is not just having the title of “leader”. He also does have a chapter on his views on the issues of our day. You can surmise his views already, if you know anything about the man.

And each chapter ends with a couple pages of excellent quotes from historical figures, military leaders, philosophers, and public figures that are relevant to the topic of that chapter. The Gunny: Straight Shooter!

I bought this book from R. Lee Ermey's (a.k.a. The Gunny) website. Of course, I paid a little extra for the hard cover and personalized autograph edition, but I'd say it was worth it. The Gunny gives it to you straight as if you were a newly graduated Marine Corps boot, speaking shoulder to shoulder with a true veteran of the campaign. As an instructor, his goal is to keep you alive and well-oiled as a fighting man and as a man. In that regard, I believe this book will be successful for you. I give the Gunny much respect as it has been well-earned, time and time again. Semper Fi, Gunny.

The most powerful and excellent devotional I have read

WOW! The most powerful and excellent devotional I have read. God taught me things through his word and the words in the pages of this devotional. I highlighted throughout my copy and starting over through it again because it is that rich and good. I went on the website to see if there was a volume two that would follow this one, but there wasn't but that's okay cause I know that just like the bible scriptures as I read through it the second time there will be different things that will stand out to me as God teaches me more. Smith Wigglesworth is an awesome man of God and all his books are just as great. He doesn't beat around the bush (so to speak) but tells it like it is and as the Holy Spirit gave him the words to speak. Highly recommend this devotional to all and if I could have I would have given it 10 stars not just the five.

At Last, A Breath Of Fresh Air On Manifesting And The Law Of Attraction!

I consider myself really blessed to have stumbled across this book.

Since the past 6 years or so, I've been an avid reader of books about manifesting and the Law Of Attraction, and may claim to be adept at all the core rules: get crystal clear on exactly what you want, visualize, feel and act as if, take inspired action, etc. But something always seemed to be missing, and I was left wondering: "Why the heck doesn't it work for me?"

This is the book that has covered everything, including all those missing pieces. In language that's as simple as it can get, Adam James has explained what more we have to do to make all our dreams come true. And no, we don't have to slog it out!

Right now, I'm working on what Adam James recommends we do first of all: clear all our limiting beliefs, and make peace with our sub-personalities. That was one of the major places where I was falling behind, since I've had a childhood that was so traumatic that you can't even begin to imagine it.

And how do we clear those limiting beliefs? Well, Adam James shares a clearing technique that is really easy and fun to do, and doesn't take too much time either. I'm now hooked to this technique and do it as much as possible throughout the day, especially in the morning as soon as I wake up, and before going to bed at night. It's been only a few days now, but I can already feel tons and tons of all sorts of lousy baggage being lifted off me forever. I'm now beginning to experience a hell lot of fresh energy, stamina, courage, cheerfulness and clarity of mind.

If, like me, you too are wondering "Why doesn't the LOA work for me?", then my reply will be: "Give the teachings of this book a try".

Healing, empowering, amazing. Thank you Adam James.

I have known about energy clearing, subconscious blocks, meditation, kundalini and chakras after reading through various books and doing different programs. But Adam's book organizes all these information and tools in an easy to follow process that you can do on a daily basis.

I've tried visualization and affirmations before with minimal success but I love how Adam puts a twist to visualizing and affirming that --- combined with the other tools in the book --- actually made sense to me and made me feel it would work consistently.

But the thing that helped me the most was the section on "Clearing Subpersonalities". I've tried energy clearing before and I thought I have already released and healed a lot of my subconscious blocks. But when I tried the clearing subpersonalities exercise, I discovered that there were two subpersonalities who were still holding me back. I was crying as I was doing the clearing but at the same time, I was feeling like a huge weight was coming off my shoulders.

After the exercise, I felt healed and even more empowered to deepen my spiritual and manifestation practice.

Thank you, Adam James. Your work is a life-changing blessing.
