About the Author

John Efron holds the Koret Chair in Jewish History at the University of California-Berkeley, where he is a specialist in the cultural and social history of German Jewry.� A native of Melbourne, Australia, he has a B.A. from Monash University in Melbourne, has studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, took his M.A. at New York University and earned a Ph.D. at Columbia University.

In addition to many articles, most recently dealing with Jewish popular culture, his books include: Medicine and the German Jews: A History (Yale University Press, 2001); and Defenders of the Race: Jewish Doctors and Race Science in Fin-de-Si�cle Europe (Yale University Press, 1994). He also co-edited the volume, Jewish History and Jewish Memory: Essays in Honor of Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi (University Press of New England, 1998). He is now working on a monograph entitled Orientalism and the German Jews in the Age of Emancipation.

Steven Weitzman received a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1987 and a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1993 in the field of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. He became a faculty member of IU’s Religious Studies department in 1993 and was chosen as first incumbent of the Irving M. Glazer Chair of Jewish Studies in 2002. That same year, he also became the director of the Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program.

Steven Weitzman is a scholar of the Hebrew Bible and early Jewish texts like the Dead Sea Scrolls, much of his work focusing on literary and religious practice in the centuries following the biblical period. Drawing heavily on comparative evidence from ancient Near Eastern, Greek and Roman literature, his research has sought to rethink the relationship between texts and contexts in the Hebrew Bible/early Judaism and to pose new questions about ritual, religious violence, early Jewish literary practice, and the history of biblical interpretation.

Professor Weitzman’s first book, Song and Story in Biblical Narrative, was the winner of the Gustave O. Arlt Prize for Outstanding Scholarship in the Humanities awarded once every seven years to a book in Religious Studies by the Council of Graduate Schools, and he has since received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Yad-Hadiv Foundation. Subsequent books include Surviving Sacrilege (Harvard University Press, 2005); Religion and the Self in Antiquity (edited with David Brakke and Michael Satlow from Indiana University Press, 2005); and The Jews: a History (with John Efron, Matthias Lehmann and Joshua Holo, forthcoming from Prentice Hall). His current projects include a biography of King Solomon under contract with Yale University Press.

Professor Weitzman serves on the editorial board of Prooftexts, the only English language journal of Jewish literary history; chaired the Bible division of the Association for Jewish Studies, and was an associate director of the Tel Beth Shemesh archaeological excavation in Israel from

Matthias B. Lehmann is an historian of early modern and modern Jewish history with a special interest in the history of the Spanish Jews and the Sephardi diaspora in the Mediterranean world. After studying in Freiburg, Jerusalem, Berlin, and Madrid, he earned his Ph.D. from Freie Universit�t Berlin in 2002 and is an associate professor of History and Jewish Studies at Indiana University. His is the author of Ladino Rabbinic Literature and Ottoman Sephardic Culture (Indiana University Press, 2005), runner-up for the National Jewish Book Award in 2006. His articles have appeared in Jewish History, Jewish Social Studies, Sefarad, and Jewish Studies Quarterly. He is currently working on a book entitled Networks of Benevolence: Philanthropy and Identity in the Sephardi Diaspora , looking at rabbinic networks and networks of support for the Jewish communities of Palestine in the Sephardi diaspora in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Joshua Holo is Associate Professor of Jewish History and�Director,�Louchheim�School�of Judaic Studies�at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in�Los Angeles. He has published on the Jews in�Byzantium,�Italy�and�Spain�in the medieval period, including The Jews of Byzantium in the Mediterranean Economy, forthcoming from Cambridge University Press, and a number of articles ranging from Genizah studies to intellectual history. He curated an exhibition of Spanish Hebrew documents and inscriptions in Valencia, Spain, and he edited the scholarly catalogue, Los jud�os espa�oles seg�n las Fuentes hebreas. He is currently investigating the German-Jewish community of Venice and the founding the first Ghetto in the sixteenth century, and continues work on the Jews of Byzantium.

If you had to summarize Fail-Safe Investing in three words, it would probably be these: Embrace the obvious. Look at your job, Browne advises. You get ahead because of your experience, education, and common sense. Your job is the reason you have money to invest in the first place. So the first of Browne's 17 rules is, "Build Your Wealth upon Your Career." Don't jeopardize your career; it's going to take many years of smart investing before your earnings will surpass what you earn at your day job--if they ever do.

The other rules aren't quite as obvious, but equally simple. Browne explains the difference between investing (making a long-term plan and sticking with it) and speculating (betting that you can beat the overall market during a specific period). He shows how life savings are easily lost when you borrow money to invest rather than investing only the money you already have. Browne also suggests a portfolio that he says is the simplest and safest possible for continual, steady returns above inflation: an equal division among stocks, bonds, gold, and cash. That covers an investor in times of prosperity (stocks), inflation (gold), deflation (bonds), and recession (cash). While many investment analysts would undoubtedly gag if you presented them with a portfolio that consisted of a 50 percent investment in gold and cash, Browne nonetheless makes a compelling argument that such an allocation makes it easier to sleep at night. Wish I'd read this 40 years ago.

During the Great Recession about 7 years ago my retirement accounts dumped a lot of my hard earned money. It took many years to just catch back up to where I'd been before.

That hurt.

The promise of Harry Browne's book is to never have that kind of pain again. The main goal of his investing plan is safety, while still earning at levels that keep you ahead of inflation.

This book is written in a very conversational tone - easy to understand - without tons of jargon.

Browne gives you 17 rules of financial safety. That's a lot of rules. Have no fear. They are mostly common sense, and designed to help you avoid the snake oil salesmen of the financial world.

They are each clearly and concisely explained.

The rules are followed by the investment plan. The plan is simple, easy to understand, and very low maintenance. Many would call it boring.

Having a safe retirement account, without constantly watching over it, is the kind of boring life I don't mind having.

I read a lot of books--but rarely write reviews. This one, however, is a game-changer.

Before reading this book, I was addicted to all kinds of financial pornography: books, newsletters, investment clubs etc. All of it was in search of the holy grail of investment knowledge...how to beat the market. Sometimes the stress of market volatility would keep me up at night. Then I met Harry Browne and his wisdom.

Simple investing for complex times

In an age when we are told we must diversify into international stocks, foreign bonds and 17 other types of assets some will find this approach refreshing. Your mutual fund megaplex will not approve. Yet the Permanent Portfolio has a 40 year track record behind it which is far longer than most of the mutual funds offered today.and why this method merits the title of "Fail-Safe Investing". The only negative is that it is a bit short on the details of implementation. For that I would consult Craig Rowland's "Permanent Portfolio" (2012) as it is quite up to date.

The Truth of Gods Word

I have studied eschatology for 10 years, and read dozens of books by authors from many
time periods, from all perspectives. For 8 of those 10 years I considered postmillenialism
as the closest system to biblical teaching. I no longer believe that. I have been convinced
by Mr. Prestons excellent and scholarly refutation of all futurist based eschatological systems.

The vast majority of the evangelical world holds to and believes in the made up story of
dispensationalism. But Our Lord is faithful to reveal Himself to those who seek the truth
of His word. I promise you will come away after reading this book a much better bible student.

Catch the power of covenant eschatology. Time will prove this doctrine as faithful to the word
of God.

EXCELLENT book and very good exegesis!

Don K. Preston has a great way of breaking everything down, dissecting it, and bringing out the truth in the Scriptures IN CONTEXT with both TIME and AUDIENCE relevance like nobody I know. And this book of his is no exception. He brings so much clarity to the subject of resurrection and Daniel chapter 12. I also appreciates how he uses exegesis and NOT eisegesis when digging into the Scriptures...I wish more Bible scholars would do that. Excellent book, and I would recommend his other books as well, as I have read almost all of them by now. :)

Erik Yuzwa (Calgary, AB) has been a professional computer programmer for over seven years since he graduated from University of Calgary in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. In 1995 he joined Wazoo Enterprises, Inc. and is now Lead Game Programmer/Designer. In 2001, he added Game Programming Educator to his schedule in which he instructs the game development process at the University of Calgary Continuing Education.

Avoid This Book

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is trying to start out in game programming. I am a grad student engineer and have been programming for over 5 years. I just recently got into game and graphics programming and this book is really terrible compared to some others I've seen. The only reason I gave it two stars is because the chapter on graphics mathematics is fairly complete, and the book provides a good high level picture of how a game is structured. However, the code specifics are downright horrible, the listings seem to be randomly thrown in without any clue as to where they should go in an actual program, the writing is boring, the directions are sparse and inchoerent, and much of the source code provided on the CD is incredibly difficult to get running (if it runs at all). Also, there is a discussion board on wazoo, but don't excpect much help. Many of the forums end with unanswered questions including many that I had. For an intro book to programming games, save your money for another book, because this book just isn't worth the cost in wasted time and money.

Overall, the book is fairly useful. However, it lacks several things:

1. Contains many snippets of code that cannot be determined where they go

2. Constantly uses forward-slashes (/) instead of backslashes (\) for filenames (even if outside of code).

3. Does not justify certain variable names; ie a local variable one would normally call "fontSize", he calls "m_pFontSize".

4. What exactly is something such as a "PNFGLGETQUERYOBJECTIVEARBPROC"? He uses types like this alot, but never says what they are (even in the introduction to OpenGL).

Frustration

I saw the Thomson logo at the top left on the front cover and thought it was textbook quality. I was dead wrong!! As the engineer said, the directions are incoherent and you don't even know when he has given instructions or just an example. I had to search the web for help answers just to do the "Hello World" application. There is no troubleshooting guide in case you get stuck. If you get stuck you better clear up your schedule cause you will be searching for answers for a while. Why not spend that time and buy a good book on programming. I would expect more from a programmer than this garbled mess of words.

The book has been modularised quite well to allow for separation of learning outcomes.
For example, a reader already familiar with how to install nginx can confidently skip chapter 1 and jump right into the meat of configuring the server.

Even for people extremely familiar with nginx, you will find this book extremely helpful as a reference for neat tips to optimise your server for best performance. (check out Chapter 8: Introducing Load Balancing and Optimization)

Best of all, unlike a lot of technical books i find myself reading, this book was quite easy to read, a lot of books in this domain tend to be far too dense and end up disengaging the reader

Informative and Readable

There a quite a few books out on Nginx which reflects on the popularity of this web server. I figured any book making it to a 3rd edition had to be good and I was not disappointed. The material is well organized which allows the reader the opportunity to read the information in whatever order they need dependent on their expertise.

I was migrating from Apache and found that section of the book to be very useful. I did not appreciate how Nginx could make enabling SSL certificates so much easier than Apache until I read 'Setting up an SSL Certificate' in Chapter 4 and 'Securing Communications with HTTPS' in Chapter 9.

The book is not only informative but readable which is unusual in a technical book. I hope the 4th edition explains the limitations of the windows version of Nginx now that it is available. Highly recommended!

The book started with an overview on why Nginx is the truly a lightweight and powerful web server being used by many enterprises today, then explain how to install it from source and using package managers, then finishes with a Production grade set up example.
The author, Clement Nedelcu has years of experience in administering Nginx Servers for big enterprises so if you would like to prevent yourself from hitting the wall or spending too much time on Google, then this book will save your life and help you start quickly with your awesome web project.

Very disappointed with this book which I was led to believe was the Guitar Wiring Bible.

I reviewed this already but it disappeared... maybe because I canned it somewhat.

This has a lot of information but I had trouble finding any sound "secrets" !

Yet again another black and white book that should be in colour and have high quality diagrams and photos which it doesn't. An absolute sin for a tech book that uses colour references to describe how to do certain types of wiring. The diagrams are minuscule thus pretty useless. Photos are grungy.

I was very disappointed with this book which I was led to believe was the Guitar Wiring Bible. I bought it on the strength of raves by others which clearly indicated they know more than the author... or nothing at all!

HOWEVER, there is some very good content so I gave it 3 stars for that.

This could have been such a great book if the author and editor had put themselves in the user/readers shoes.

Good sound, from strings to amp

Good history books tell you not only what happened and when, but fundamentally why. And good science books tell you not only what happens, but more importantly, how.
Lemme's book is about history and science of electric guitars, and is one of the most abundant in `why's' and `how's' that we could find on this subject, yet.

Published in both German and English, it is plentiful of occasions to bring myths down. "Musicians tend not to think in technical terms but rather emotionally, and come up with poetic words for sounds, which cannot be upheld technically. An unbelievable cult has developed around pickups, inflamed by advertising managers and music magazines. This is for the most part hot air and is all about sales figures". The denounce is true, and not only for pickups, but for musical instruments in general. The good thing about that kind of comments is that they are supported by 287 pages of factual experience.

"Electric Guitar - Sound Secrets and Technology" is easy to read; the choice of words is austere and precise; you must only, here and there, find your way around the occasional sentence which structure reveals the German language of the original. The more of 200 graphics and pictures leave little space for doubts, though.
I have years under my belt in the professional guitar making business, but was greatly surprised of discovering a lot of contents that redefined my knowledge on many subjects, and that answered long held questions. I found many "blind" topics, too; those about things that I ignored that I ignored.

This book balances and integrates theoretical and practical topics, all accompanied with the corresponding references in the form of tables, wiring diagrams and charts. It deals with the complete chain of sound from the strings to the amp, taking a deep look into each link of that chain: the pickups, the body, the electronics, and even the cable, which has a fundamental role that players and luthiers alike many times overlook. Guitar synthesizers have a dedicated chapter, too.
The book ends up with a look into the passion of guitar collecting. This is a chapter in which the marketing resource of overusing the word "vintage" is demystified and replaced with clear tips to evaluate an instrument from an electrical, mechanical and ergonomic standpoint.

All in all: if you are new to electric guitars, start here. If you are familiar with them, use this book to reach the next level. Don't get scared by the somewhat pricey tag. Highly recommended.

Great book covering a lot of things other books do not. My number 1 guitar electronics design book. Read the online paper that Helmuth released. It is essentially a section taken from the book, and is what prompted me to purchase the book.
