More of a Volume 2 or "Pro" version than a second edition

In summary, the value here is outstanding. The book is a comprehensive set of best practices (including supporting rationale) that carries you and your data from the moment you lift your finger from the shutter release until the sun burns out.

I had recently read the first edition when I discovered that a second edition was in the works. I was very impressed with the breadth and depth of the first book, and the second edition expands on both. I was a little concerned that I was buying a new cover, some corrected errata, and maybe a couple new concepts. While the cover is new, the book is what I'd consider either a "Pro" version, or a second volume. It turns the first edition into somewhat of an overview of all the concepts with implementations, still useful in its own right. However, there is a great deal of new material as well as added depth in the material covered in the first edition.

Similar to the first edition, the book presents an all-inclusive system for digital asset management. One of the attractions for me is that the system is essentially drawn from first principles in a variety of disciplines. For instance, it is written by a professional photographer who clearly has a need for a system that works day-to-day in the trenches, yet it's accessible to the layman since the author takes the time to explain the concepts behind the implementation. The author has clearly honed the system through a great deal of experience as well as significant research and what I'm finding to be active participation in the imaging and asset management communities.

A degree of computer facility is required to get the most from the book, but on the other hand I'd argue that the book isn't a bad way to learn some of the fundamentals and utility of metadata.

The system described is well thought-out, scalable, systematic, and addresses many key concerns of anyone with a computer and a camera. The book establishes some best practices (including explanations based on sound concepts as well as pitfalls to be aware of) for things like organization, rating, validation, backup, storage, and archiving, all while retaining usability. I admit that I don't hang out with any professional photographers, but with that being said, there is no one I know that has a system for managing their photo collection that safeguards it from loss while making it available to work on and share. Basically, everyone I know has had multiple cameras over the years and has an amorphous, unmanageable blob of photos strewn across hard drives, with no concept of what's there, what's backed up, what's safe, and what they're repeating whenever they try to sort, rate, or edit.

This book stands out among some of the others that I have read in that it clearly communicates the rationale behind the workflow steps (and presents alternatives). There are many successful photographers out there, and they all must have systems and workflows that work for them. There are other books that simply document a photographer's dogmatic process and leave a lot of questions and loose ends. It's tough to get a sense of the relative importance of all the interdependent decisions you have to make. The DAM Book, in contrast, leave very few questions or loose ends, and is very comprehensive, and to me the author's enthusiasm for the subject matter shows through. If you're unsure about something, the author is active and responsive in the forums over at thedambook.com.

Highly recommended and worth far more than I paid for it.

The "Must Have" Book for Digital Photographers

Peter Krogh is arguably the leading industry expert on Digital Asset Management. His first edition of the book became the bible for countless photographers moving from film to digital. Now with that transition well behind us, Krogh has updated and expanded his book to cover many of the new tools available for photographers. He covers the latest versions of software applications like Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom. He clearly explains how to add metadata that will be critical in tracking future electronic uses and preventing your images from becoming orphan works. He refines his approach to digital asset management techniques that reflect the latest industry standards. (Many of which he helped create!)

His recommendations, if followed, will assure that photographers will not lose their valuable digital images and be able to quickly locate them and provide them for their clients.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is serious about digital photography.

An Essential Work for Photographers

Peter Krogh has completely revised his seminal book on Digital Asset Management. In the time since the last book, new programs, new concepts and new resources have appeared. At the same time, digital images and files continue to grow larger, filling our hard drives faster, and further pushing the need to store and organize these digital assets in a careful and efficient manner. This is not a mere "update" of the first book, but a complete revision, with current references to hardware, software, and issues the growing files and folders of images that have to be sorted.

Peter's writing is straight forward, informative, and filled with helpful advice. He explains all types of efforts, storage, programs and solutions. It is not a "do it my way" or else, but a careful and reasoned look at all of the options, and pros and cons of the same.

I look at the book as my primer on security and peace of mind. As he and most people note, it is not if your computer will crash, it is when a hard drive may fail. I loved his comment that when writing the book, he had his laptop fall off the desk, and he had to go to his clones and back ups in his hard drives to restore it. This book will give you the plan and ability to do this for your files and images.

Read this book a couple of times. It takes a while to get the whole picture, and what might work for you, and then keep it close as an essential reference.

We spend thousands of dollars on new cameras, lenses, cards, paper and ink, and in the end, what we really value the most is the image, and need to preserve the same. We all want to have the ability to find and print the best, or locate the shot of Cousin Joe when we need to. No longer must you search through boxes of negatives or prints, or try to recall what year and what date you took it, and hope that you put it away in the correct order. This book will help you organize your photographic life.

I cannot think of a photography or computer instruction book that was more helpful or better written than this book. It neither speaks down to to the beginner nor fails to challenge the expert. Buy it, read it, and refer to it.

Comments on Manual Usefulness

While this provides a lot of useful information, it does not quite make it as a "shop manual." For example, the electrical diagrams refer to "early" vs. "later" versions of certain tractor models, but it does not provide any indication by serial number or other identifying marks as to which is which, nor does it point out the very few circuit changes that could lead to more rapid identification. It would also be helpful if it reinforced the schematics with photographic representations of some of the special parts which are unique to these machines. The same can be said about most of the text. While it is helpful for disassembly and reassembly, it does not go into sufficient detail for troubleshooting, measurements to help with replacement or remachining of parts, etc., which can be frustrating when servicing older machines. This may be a necessary manual to obtain before servicing these machines, but it leaves too many questions unanswered.

It's not a service manual but I knew it wouldn't be before I bought it. But it has a lot of info to keep everything running smooth. I saw other reviews complain about not being able to tell the difference between tractor models but I don't have a problem at all. If your not sure just look at your serial numbers. I bought this for my 855 and for the price the info and diagrams are suffice. If your looking for a complete break down of every part buy a shop manual for $150

Speak like a Chap�n!

For about 50 years I have been very interested in the slang of Latin American countries. When a foreigner can use correctly the pet expressions of the host country, smiles appear and doors open. Having visited about 18 Latin American counties and lived in Brazil, Costa Rica, and Panama I know this to be true. If you have contact with Guatemalans, Jamison's book will give you a headstart at learning to express yourself as a Chap�n. The vocabulary is useful, practical, and explained with many examples of how to use it in everyday conversations. I would like very much to see the book expanded to include more expressions, and it would also be helpful to have an English-to-Guatemalan-slang index.

A Usage Guide

This is a cute book. 200 (plus 1) Guatemalan idioms are explained. What is nice is that each entry is more than just a definition, but also there are elaborations that help understand how to use each phrase. But there is a lot more to Guatemalan Spanish than what is here.

If you want to know more about Guatemalan Spanish, look for the Dictionary of Popular Guatemalan expression by Daniel Armas. There are several editions of this book, here is one: Diccionario de la Expresion Popular Guatemalteca. I - Vocabulario, II - Modismos, III - Apendice, Adagios y Refranes It is a few decades old so may not have the most modern usage, but it has a few thousand more "Chapinismos" (phrases used in Guatemala). In Guatemala, look for this book in the Piedra Santos store in Gemenis Mall (Zona 10).

If you want even more, look for the book Chapinismos del Quijote (Spanish Edition). I have not read it, but I was told that it explains that many of the idiosyncracies of Spanish as spoken in Guatemala come from the fact that early Spanish settlers in Guatemala are from the same region of Spain as Cervantes, thus the Spanish spoken in Guatemala continues to use the language of Don Quixote. In Guatemala, look for this book in Sophos bookstore in Fontabella Mall (Zona 10).

This is a must if you are traveling to Guatemala. I knew cerain words in other languages could have hidden meaning, but this really helps you make sure you are saying the words correctly and in the correct context.

Short, Grad Level Survey Coursebook

OUCH! ... and OUCH! I've purchased many texts based on reviews, sales rankings and preveiws, but this is my first major burn. With no reviews, I based my purchase on the high sales ranking. But I don't know who would find this a value. It is a high level survey text. Short chapters with min development. I know enough about the subject such that some chapters are total review while others are nowhere near complete for a topic new to a person. Physically short, small text overall - the white matter is 9/16" thick! Even has the audacity to include the "filler" appendices with copies of contracts. Well written with good grammar, lots of graphs etc. so it is obviously a university favorite somewhere, hopefully with an excellent instructor offering lots of additional commentary. But not remotely worth the whopping price, and wish the author would teach me his secret to publishing negotiations. Short of that, send me a check. Next version, add 200 pages and cut the coverage then add some depth. Maybe if I were in a different industry or discipline (e.g. banking, civil) and this was to be used for an MS/PhD elective?

Good resource for me!

I'm employed as Project Manager for a company which fabricates and erects steel framed commercial buildings. When I first began this job, many administrative processes were less-than-ideal. Chapter 17 covers Safety quite well. We have made changes to our documents and breifings which replicate the guidelines within this book!

I found Chapter 3 helpful. Change Orders are explained well enough for my needs.

Chapter 7 is titled, Project Scheduling. I'd hoped to learn about features and use of common software scheduling programs but instead rec'd a chapter of fairly useless math calculations and symbols which are largley irrelevant in 2007. Hey, software is the way to go!

In summary, I found this book to be well written and organized. I doubt it can be PERFECT for each and every Construction Manager but I'm glad this resource is on my shelf!

This text is highly recommended as to understanding the basic principles of construction management.
This text takes through the entire construction process from preparing the bid package through legal procedures through phases during the project through project planning & scheduling to networking, labor, cash flow & control and the list goes on and on.
This text did not skip a beat on how the construction starts to the completion of the project.
Just talking about this text gives me the chills because it's well thought out and clear illustrations provide an invaluable depth of information on the construction business process.
I have recommended this text to some of my colleagues and they have thanked me for introducing them to this excellent text.
I can go on and on about the depths of this book but I can't. If you want to learn the construction process and the responsibly of a CM & the ins and outs of running a successful construction project this is the text for you. No doubt!
I took this CM class and thought I know a good portion of the construction process but, this book opened my eyes to some many things that I never imagined that needs to be known. What I thought I know was just the process of one trade and this text took me from the owner to CM to the contractors though litigations etc.
Again, if you want to learn the construction process from start to finish and all elements included with the construction process then this is the book for you.
This book is a sure keeper!!!!!!

Great Read. Should be a movie!!

A novel for all the geeks out there and for those that like to pretend they are not geeks, but really are. "The Art of Dork" fits in quite nicely with the recent trend of movies that usually stars Michael Cera or Jesse Eisenberg. I Think this would actually be a cool movie with one of them as the star.

It's a comedy of sorts about a college kid trying to win the girl of his dreams by utilizing the lessons in "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu. There are plenty of pop culture references since the main character (TL James) is a movie/book/music geek, although some seem to be quite obscure. TL's interests are all over the map.

Having known the author for a few years, I've come to equate TL's fictional hometown of Williamson, RI to the authors hometown of Cumberland, RI. Being familiar with the area, it was quite nice to read the novel and feel like I know exactly where they are. It's also interesting to see how much of himself he poured into the character as well as some mutual friends we have.

I think this is a great novel to start out a career as a writer. I can't wait for more. There were quite a few spelling and grammatical errors, but I chalk that up to being published by a small company. At present, I believe it is only available in ebook form, including Amazon's Kindle.

These are the first books from this author that I have read. Before purchasing this book set I had got the first book free. Noticed the ad on Facebook & downloaded. Wasn't to sure if I was going to read it because it was a series based book & I tend to stay away from those. Though for some reason every time I open my kindle app I was drawn to it so I thought well I'm not really out anything but a few hours of my time if I don't like it. Wow! I was pleasantly surprised!! I finished it that night & like with any series based book I was left wanting more, why the book set...lol I was a little disappointed in book number 2. I don't think it was as good as the first but understand where she was going with it so all in all it was still a great read. Number 3 I think was my fav! If I had one negative, it would be the ending. I was left wanting a little more especially after investing myself in 3 books. It felt to rushed & still unfinished. Even with some negatives here or there surrounding the book but hey what book is perfect & at least she wrote a book. I loved them. Thank you Brooke! I look forward to your other series James Thomas.

If you love plot twists,love and steamy sex this is for you !

Just loved this story! Couldnt stop reading. Love, revenge, sex,passion, family drama,forgiveness, oh did I mention steamy sex and love ! Really good plot with twists and turns. good characters to fall in love /hate with. Some people are just meant to be together forever. Hope to see more from this author.

Anthony Bourdain, you would love this!

Sorry to rave about an out-of-print book, but this one will be well worth tracking down. You'll thank me!
I am wary of men who cook. Believe me, from personal experience. There is considerable power in the kitchen, which we girls have had wrenched from us. Our mothers were more fortunate. How I wish I could yell at a man, `Your Supper's in the oven!' Alas, progress.
This story unfolds to the unsuspecting reader like a fairy tale, but it soon turns grim indeed, pun intended. Conrad is the chef who mysteriously arrives in town: `Six and a half feet tall, clad in black and riding on a bicycle'. He not only knows exactly what he wants, but he knows what everyone else wants as well. He very quickly becomes the most feared and revered man in the town of Cobb. His power over women is to seduce them with his dark culinary art, make them totally dependent, and their waistlines are is then his. He is not a man to cross at the pub. Most macho cooks are good knife fighters. A particularly gruesome scene takes place when he takes on a rival chef who threatens to bone him like a chicken, butcher him like a hog...
Never underestimate a man who cooks, and cooks well. Had it been Eve and Conrad in the Garden of Eden, Conrad would have taken the apple, diced it with his glinting chef's knife and transformed it into Calvados.
Harry Kressing writes a dark tale indeed. He has been compared to Kafka and Orwell, and quite rightly so. The genre is fantasy for those who appreciate cuisine and has undeniable makings of a cult book. This is a dish which is still good and should be reheated. I wish some Evil Corporate Publisher would see his way to a reprint.

A grim fairy tale

This grim fairy tale for adults follows the path of Conrad, the sinister chef who has plans afoot that aren't all as they appear from first glance.
A darkly humorous tale of food and gluttony, you have to admire the skills Conrad executes to reach his ultimate goal.
I awarded three stars because although I admire the writing and the clever plot I can't say with all honesty I enjoyed this overly much.

Living the Chosen and Cherished Life

Kimberly Hahn has developed a beautiful study for women of all ages that helps us see how God created us and in what way we can live our life to the fullest as wives and mothers. She helps young women prepare for marriage, she helps women bring more to their marriage than they perhaps thought about, given the culture we live in, and she helps mothers raise their children to cherish their purity and to become good spouses themselves. She speaks with clarity and with experience and is someone that we can trust, knowing that she lives what she teaches. The DVD series allows us to have her into our homes and share her knowledge of Scripture as it relates to women, marriage, and family. Kimberly touches our hearts, whatever our age may be. She is a treasure to Christianity!

Balanced Resource

Proverbs 31: 10-12, the basis for this work, quotes the mother of Lemuel, King of Massa, giving her son guidance on choosing an appropriate bride. Chosen and Cherished, based on these sections from Proverbs, grew out of bible study Kimberly Hahn has offered for years to Franciscan University students. The verses describe the worthy wife as more valuable than pearls, an unfailing prize, and one who brings good rather than evil to her husband.

Each of the six parts takes its title from a verse in Proverbs 31 and is broken into two chapters that feature Hahn's experiences as wife and mother, additional Scripture passages, and Church teachings. This structure provides an opportunity for Hahn to address such issues as premarital sex, adultery, divorce, contraception, and abortion. She also offers practical advice and stories to illustrate the principles at hand. In the chapter What Really Counts, Hahn contrasts "behavior fit for a prostitute a century ago (that) now parades across the TV screen" with qualities she observes in her mother and other older women who exemplify "godly womanliness." A section on pursuing purity in A Woman of Worth lists guidelines to help unmarried persons avoid near occasions of sin. The chapter on the sanctity of marriage discusses the role of parents in supporting the marriages of their adult children. It contains a series of bullet points under the headings quality time, physical touch and closeness, gift giving, and words of affirmation.

Overall, this is a balanced resource, tackling issues head on while affirming and reaffirming the immense rewards for couples who, with faith, hope, love, and prayer, live their commitment to the vocation of marriage.

Kimberly Hahn has a clear and direct writing style that is relaxed and easy to understand. She does a great job of mixing personal experience with scriptural and church teaching. The message she conveys is so appropriate for marriages today and will inspire those who are married or thinking of marriage.
