Ideal for non-specialist general readers with an interest in Indian culture and history
By Midwest Book Review
The architectural heritage of the Indian subcontinent spans thousands of years and layers of diverse civilizations, beginning with the Indus Valley settlements and the early Vedic traditions. Impressively illustrated by Suparna Bhalla and Surat Kumar Manto, Introduction To Indian Architecture by architect Bindia Thapar (currently a visiting lecturer at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi) surveys the Hindu, Jain, Mughal (Islamic) and colonial (British), and post independence architectural styles. Showcased are monuments and/or buildings which represent the various individual schools of architecture singled out. Enhanced with maps, site plans , and other visual materials, Introduction To Indian Architecture is ideal for non-specialist general readers with an interest in Indian culture and history, students of multicultural architecture, as well as an essential addition to both academic and community library Architectural History reference collections.

A Superb Overview
By Barbara Evans
Though I can't improve upon the Midwest Book Review's overview of this book, I hope it helps prospective buyers to know that two sources think INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN ARCHITECTURE is terrific. Especially pleasing are (by my count) the 216 colored photographs, which include a number of close-ups of details of buildings. Also excellent are the many line drawings that are included to show structural detail. For those who want an in-depth exploration of a particular period or type of Indian architecture, there are other (far more expensive) books to choose from. For one who is interested in ALL Indian architecture, however, this is the book to buy.

1/2/11 Update: Having just returned from India, I'm even more impressed with this book. It even has a section on the fascinating stepwells.

Imagining Zion: Dreams, Designs, and Realities in a Century of Jewish Settlement, by S. Ilan Troen

The story of how Zionist colonisers planned and established nearly 700 agricultural settlements, towns and cities from the 1880s to the present. This extraordinary activity of planners, architects, social scientists, military personnel, politicians and settlers is inextricably linked to multiple contexts: Jewish and Zionist history, the Arab/Jewish conflict, and the diffusion of European ideas to non-European worlds. Ilan Troen demonstrates how professionals and settlers continually innovated plans for both rural and urban frontiers in response to the competing demands of social and political ideologies and the need to achieve productivity, economic independence, and security in a hostile environment. In the 1930s, security became the primary challenge, shaping and even distorting patterns of growth. Not until the 1993 Oslo Accords, with prospects of compromise and accommodation, did planners again imagine Israel as a normal state, developing like other modern societies. Troen concludes that if Palestinian Arabs become reconciled to a Jewish state, Israel will reassign priority to the social and economic development of the country and region.

Essential reading on Jewish settlement in Palestine/Israel
By A Customer
Ilan Troen's Imagining Zion may well be the very most important book to appear in many years on patterns of Jewish settlement in Palestine/Israel. At a time when much discussion is devoted to Jewish settlement and, related to that, the very legitimacy of the Zionist enterprise in the Land of Israel, Troen's balanced and highly informative book is a must read. Thoroughly researched, lucidly written, and informed by an intimate familiarity with comparative materials (the author was an urban historian of the United States before switching to the history of the Yishuv), this book serves as a much needed corrective to the spate of essays that have recently appeared lining the modern state of Israel in most superficial ways to so-called settler states such as French Algeria and South Africa. In telling the compelling story of Zionist achievement, the author never loses sight of how the Jewish community in the Land of Israel envisioned the master plan of Zionist development and also took into consideration its impact on the indigenous Arab population. This highly nuanced and extremely informative book should attract audiences drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. It is not only very timely, it has the virtue of being written in very accessible prose.

One of the finest books on Zionist ideology
By Paula Hyman
"Among all the books on the subject of Zionist economic/security ideology, this is one of the finest I have ever read. Its research is vast, its approach is fresh and original, its conclusions are sound."--Howard M. Sachar, author of A History of Israel
"Prof. Troen confronts questions that stand at the heart of Israel's self-understanding. His answers will surely arouse controversy, but the questions he poses must be faced."--David Engel, New York University
"This is the only comprehensive history of Zionist and Israeli settlement available in English. Troen's focus on Zionism's developmental ethos and its realization yields an important contribution to a field dominated by high politics and military affairs."--Derek J. Penslar, Zacks Professor of History; Director, Jewish Studies Program, University of Toronto
"This is a superb book. A sweeping study of the Zionist settlement of Palestine from the late nineteenth century to our own time, it analyzes the ideological, pragmatic, and ultimately strategic concerns that shaped the nature of Jewish communities in the State of Israel as well as the pre-state period. It succeeds in integrating the story of the building of Israel--from the kibbutz to Tel Aviv to development towns--within the context of urban and rural development in the modern western world."--Paula Hyman, Yale University

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—In this beautifully illustrated picture book, children are introduced to the idea that wild things should be wild. Readers follow the title character, Swatch, as she catches and tames hues. With surrealist imagery and swirling colors, the artwork draws readers in. The message underlying the stunning images asks kids to consider how we should treat wild things. While the text is at times moralizing, the balance of the overall work is excellent. The pace at which the story unfolds is quick enough to keep children's attention while slow enough to beg the pondering of the work's larger themes. The high-quality value and gradation of the color pull children into Swatch's world. While the text at times seems to jump across the page, it generally adds to the tone. This is also a wonderful choice for vocabulary building. The composition and flow allow the pictures to shine, while gently pushing readers forward. VERDICT The gorgeous illustrations are enough to recommend this title, but the sweet message makes it a must-read; a great read-aloud.—Lauren Lancaster, Crafton Public Library, Pittsburgh

Review
“The gorgeous illustrations are enough to recommend this title, but the sweet message makes it a must-read; a great read-aloud.” (School Library Journal)

“Denos’ text is fierce and crisp, her color-characters wondrous...spellbinding.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

Praise for JUST BEING AUDREY: “Denos’ soft pastel illustrations cut just the right Audrey outline (complete with flapping neck scarf), and fans will especially enjoy picking out the movie roles depicted in a two-page spread of costumes.” (Booklist)

Praise for JUST BEING AUDREY: “Audrey Hepburn proves as irresistible a character in the pages of a children’s book as she is in those soign roles of the silver screen.” (Publishers Weekly)

Impulse Buy that I LOVE
By Quilter7
Normally, I wait on purchases to find a good price. This book was an exception. I just bought it after reading a review online. It is fabulous! It's an easy one to read aloud to kids. This book captures the essence of being an artist, or even a wannabe artist. My ten year old artist daughter loves it, and my six year old loves it. We have read it together many times in the few days I've had it. I'm not going to tell you the story line. It's better that way. If you love picture books and love color, this book is for you.

Earthquake engineering is the ultimate challenge for structural engineers. Even if natural phenomena involve great uncertainties, structural engineers need to design buildings, bridges, and dams capable of resisting the destructive forces produced by them. These disasters have created a new awareness about the disaster preparedness and mitigation. Before a building, utility system, or transportation structure is built, engineers spend a great deal of time analyzing those structures to make sure they will perform reliably under seismic and other loads. The purpose of this book is to provide structural engineers with tools and information to improve current building and bridge design and construction practices and enhance their sustainability during and after seismic events. In this book, Khan explains the latest theory, design applications and Code Provisions. Earthquake-Resistant Structures features seismic design and retrofitting techniques for low and high raise buildings, single and multi-span bridges, dams and nuclear facilities. Testing is a key component of agile development. The widespread adoption of agile methods has brought the need for effective testing into the limelight, and agile projects have transformed the role of testers. Much of a tester's function, however, remains largely misunderstood. What is the true role of a tester? Do agile teams actually need members with QA backgrounds? Interesting, but a little bit too soft
By Paulo Sergio Medeiros
I think this book is a little overhyped. Don't get me wrong. The book offers many interesting insights and experience reports about how testing can be organized by an agile team. However, in my opinion, much of them are "common sense" or were already explored in other sources (as some reviewers stated: "more about agile than agile testing"). For example, suggestions like "begin with the happy path", "put test stories on your backlog to make the test activities visible", "when working with legacy systems, create tests for the new features and, then, treat the old code in small steps" and "i (the tester) used to put candies on my table to attract programmers" are all interesting. But, at least for me, that wasn't *ONLY* what I was expecting for. Also, is that really new to someone that has experience with test or software? Another example of my expectations was about the beginning with test automation chapter. I really liked to be alerted to evaluate the ROI of what needs to be automated, but where are the details of inserting these activities in a team? What are the steps?

As a practical guide I was really expecting to see *DETAILED* examples of software testing in an agile context, distilled in steps or recommendations for its application in other contexts. I wouldn't be bothered if these examples weren't directly applicable to my context, but at least I would know how decisions were made and how they worked out. Overall, I was expecting much more technical content and even without all this the book managed to have 576 pages. Ok, again, maybe it was just my wrong expectations, but be advised to what you will get. If you are new to Agile you can read this book. Also, even if you are experienced, but want to refresh some good "common sense" practices it's a good read too. Otherwise, don't create many expectations as I did.

A much needed book. A must read.
By Bas Vodde
"Agile Testing" is an excellent and must-needed book related to testing in agile product development. Much has been written about test-driven development on unit level, however, little has been written on higher level testing and the role of testers and test departments in Agile development. This book changes that!

The book consists of 6 parts. The first part if an introduction, the last part is a summary. The introduction starts with a short explanation of agile testing and then followed by the ten principles of an Agile Tester. One of the key messages in this book is "the whole team approach", meaning that testing should be within the team and should not just be "the testers job". Anyone in the team can test, however, teams will probably still benefit from having a test specialist of a test expert. This mindset is one of the key thoughts the book repeats over and over again. In the last chapter, the authors summarize their thoughts with the seven key success factors for testing. Again, "the whole team approach" is #1. The agile testing mindset -- the proactive, creative cooperative mindset as opposed to a quality policy mindset -- is the second success factor.

The second part of the book describes organizational challenges. In my opinion, this part was perhaps the most needed. In many organizations testers struggle to find their role on agile product development. The chapter relate to cultural change, team logistics and transitioning typical processes. I thought the chapters were enlightening. Parts I liked were the discussion about the change in role for QA managers and especially the experience that, without proper coaching, a lot of traditional testing people might simply flee your agile development effort.

The third part of the book takes Brian Maricks four testing quadrants and explains these in details. These quadrants describe the different types of testing and how they would happen in agile development. The unit testing part is not covered thoroughly, as the authors (correctly) mention that this is covered well by other literature. The higher-level functional (acceptance) testing is covered well, including advise on automation. Exploratory testing is also covered in detail and explains its role in agile development clearly. Non-functional testing is covered reasonably well, especially considering that this depends so much on the type of product you are developing.

The fourth part of the book focuses more on test automation. I didn't find much new information in here, though it was a good summary of modern test automation and some of the challenges and difference between traditional test automation.

Part five follows an agile tester though an agile project and explains for every step in an agile project what the role of an agile tester is. It starts with the role in release planning and estimating. Then it explains the preparation before an iteration (product backlog refinement) and how early example tests can (should) be written. It continues with iteration planning and then the actual activities an agile tester would do during the iteration. This part also includes the important discussion related to the use of bug tracking systems. The part ends with the iteration review/retrospective and some final works about the actual delivery.

As mentioned, in my opinion, a good book on agile testing was absolutely needed. And the authors do not disappoint at all. Their knowledge about the subject is obvious. They have put much effort in sharing actual experiences by the many sidebox experience sharing stories. They touch the seldom touched parts related to organizations and roles and transitioning. Their writing is clear, though sometimes repeats itself (but not so that it is annoying). Not much topics are left unanswered, the book is thorough.

All in all, this book is exactly the kind of book that was needed. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in agile development and especially testers who have a hard time finding their new roles. Great work! Five stars.

Great help for transitioning QA analysts to Agile teams
By Amazon Customer
I'm a QA Manager in a department of 30 testers, most of whom have spent their entire careers on traditional SDLC "waterfall" projects. One of my, perhaps unenviable, tasks is to help transition these folks onto newly formed Agile teams. While I've had success, I wish I had this book sooner!

Crispin and Gregory have created a practical and very readable reference that shines a light on the roles of testers, and testing management -- areas that are often neglected in most of the work that I've found. Perhaps most importantly, they address the fear and apprehension that testers feel when faced with the prospect of joining an Agile team -- the same emotions I've seen (and felt) time and time again.

There's an appropriate mix of high level concepts and low level specifics. The book starts with discussions of principles and mindsets and moves on, in the later chapters to discuss such things as specific techniques of test automation. All along there are anecdotes from interviews with real agile teams and quoted articles from testing luminaries such as Brian Marick, Michael Bolten, et. al.

I've already begun to incorporate much of the material in these books into my own writings and presentations and it's certainly gratifying to see some of my own ideas mirrored. I now have solid references to back them up! I highly recommend this book for testers and testing managers who are planning to start on Agile projects, or who have years of experience on them. There's surely something in this book that will influence you.

A British Medical Association Book Awards WINNER, Surgery category!

A Doody's Core Title for 2015!

"Collectively, they have once again produced an excellent text that manages to cover the broad scope of emergency medicine while remaining an easily readable and practical resource....Last, for the inevitable comparison of this current edition of Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine with other available emergency medicine textbooks available: in my opinion, Tintinalli’s still comes out on top. It is more concise and easier to read than some, yet it covers the breadth of emergency medicine practice more comprehensively than others. The bottom line is that I like this book. Just as previous editions did, the seventh presents all of the most pertinent and up-to-date information in a well-organized format that is comprehensive yet easy to read. That and many of the attractive new features in this current edition will ensure its place on my bookshelf for years to come."--JAMA

Kindle edition needs working index
By aglass
Tintinalli's was a "go to" emergency medicine reference during my training years over a decade ago...

I purchased the 7th edition in it's Kindle form a month ago; and am happy with its content.

It is a formidable reference, over 2000 pages in its printed form. Such a vast reference really needs an index, especially if it is to be used at the point of care by an overworked clinician.

In electronic form, the index exists without hyperlinks or page location markers, making this reference unsearchable by this method.

I would give 5 stars if its index was hyperlinked, but for now I can't give it more than 3.

Room for Improvement
By Patrick A. Lanius
But of course at that price they should also provide options allowing for more rapid searches of the text and locating pertinent sections for research purposes. If you use the index hyperlinked page references there is no way to return to the index in a simple one-stroke move. I seem to have to go to the table of contents, page down to the index and tap it to get back to the index. This is all being done in Kindle so I don't know if that and other accessibility problems are solved by other applications or even if the textbook can be opened in them. To me there is vast room for improvements. Even if there are solutions to these difficulties there should be a more readily accessible explanation somewhere.

need a more functional TOF
By Jason Lin
This is a textbook and I usually need to quickly find out some of the contents. Thus,I need "search only in TOC" or a "shrinkable TOC". Besides, the tables in this Kindle edition come in low resolution.

Diva Lioness vs. Lion/Wolf Hybrid
By WickedKarma
3.5
Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm really liking this series mainly because of the unique hybrids. Of course we have Hannah our diva pure blood lioness but then we have Ryland our grumpy blue collar lion/wolf hybrid. ***sigh*** I don't know about everybody else but I love the thought of a silver lion who occasionally "wags" his tail. This is CK doing her short(er) story justice. There's plenty of humor (mainly Hannah), a tad bit of violence, and all kinds of anticipation before we get to the sexy times. I will forever be complaining that I want full length stories from CK, but on a day where I'm busy and don't have the time to fully commit this was a perfect length. The question she leaves us with though... is will we get another story when Ryland takes his rightful spot?

Loved it!
By Lexee Tigger
I really enjoyed this story! It picks up right where the first Buchanan book ends almost. Hannah is the sister to Bethany and Ryland is the half-brother to Carter. Hannah is not happy with where her life is headed right now. She isn't sure what to do and so has headed to Deal's Gap to press pause on life while she house sits for her sister while she's on her honeymoon. Ryland is the handyman in town and when Hannah spills nail polish all over the patio she heads in for help. When she meets Ryland, they are both immediately drawn to each other and know that they are mates but Hannah was not expecting this since she is already contracted to marry someone else. (Her father set it up for the good of the pride.) Hannah runs back to her sister's place, and wants her mate to chase her even though she ran. He follows through and sneaks up on her.
I loved the interactions between the two characters and it had me cracking up a couple of times. Hannah is a no nonsense person and an alpha female. When Ryland tries to get away with some things or puts himself down because he doesn't feel worthy, Hannah will have nothing to do with it. She lets him have it and we see her protective, alpha female instincts come out. I love the hybrid mix that Celia Kyle has come up with. The way that she has mixed the traits is awesome, especially how she lets us know how the two animals affect one another and the human. This story flowed really well and since the beginning is pretty much on go the entire time. There is always something going on as Ryland and Hannah try and adjust to the huge change in their lives and figure out each other and how to make an us. The sex is explicit, with a whole lot of sexual tension. Circumstances keep them from completing the mating for a lot of the book but it's done really well. This story doesn't have a whole bunch of secondary characters and the ones that are there don't interact person to person very much. This didn't detract from the story at all as it fit the scenario really well. This story is a quick read. It is part of the Southern Shifters Kindle World and the second book in the Buchanan Clan series but I felt that it stood alone. You don't need to have read any of the other stories before reading this or have to read any after this to have a complete story. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for more.
